I'm writing to let you know that I had to put down Romeo this past weekend. He was a stray when found and was estimated to be 10 years old at that time. I adopted him a little over a year ago. He was diagnosed with severe allergies, which were a struggle to control, but things were finally getting better with the help of a dermatologist;. If it weren't for medical issues, he would have been perfect. He has had a difficult time getting up the last few weeks (more than normal) and I thought it was just arthritis getting worse. Friday at noon, I had to help him up but he was able to go outside on his own. I had to leave and when my husband came home at 4:30 pm, he couldn't get up and had peed on the carpet. His breathing was very labored and he had a high temperature. I took him to the vet and after some procedures, she couldn't figure out what was wrong. He got some meds for the temperature and fluids and I monitored him overnight. Back to the vet in the morning and he wasn't getting better—fever was dropping but now feet were getting cold and gums very pale. She didn't think additional treatment provided much chance for recovery and might be prolonging things—most puzzled by him not being able to get up. He seemed uncomfortable too—was restless during the night. So, I made the decision to put him at peace since I didn't think he'd likely live another day. Thanks for allowing me to have this dog for his last year. He was a blessing :) |
