Shadow (Shane 10-298)

Profile

Shane is a handsome, smaller (53#) medium-colored male golden and is in the process of going through quite a transformation in his foster home, whether he knew it or not (actually, he had no idea!) when he arrived here on 10/18/10. The first order of business was to get him to the vet. The next order of business once he gets home on 10/21 will be to put a little more weight on him, especially since he will lose just a little more during the neutering process!

Shane comes to RAGOM from an owner who had him for 1-1/2 years. They had rescued him from the local animal shelter, so his exact age is unknown, but estimated to be 5-6 years old. Shane was adopted to be a companion/therapy dog for a 10 year-old son with autism. Shane was not able to adapt to apartment style living, however, and preferred being outdoors instead, where he was a perfect play companion.  So far, so good, at his foster home, but he did spend a lot of time panting and pacing his first day here, but that is normal for most new fosters. Shane now has a TOTALLY new different story as he becomes familiar with the world of RAGOM and the company of three other dogs, four more cats, new feeding times, new dog food, and a couple more humans to deal with every day. Oh, and I forgot to tell him about seeing the vet for a physical, full complement of shots, heartworm and flea/tick treatment, nail clipping, neutering, micro-chipping, and whatever else may be needed. Thank you RAGOM, for of all these wonderful and good things a dog needs to have! The adoption fee is used to help cover these types of expenses, but the vet bills are usually more than that in these initial stages. Contributions for the cause are always welcome. Once Shane returns to 'the herd", we will give you more updates. We can tell you, however, he adapted quickly to the Gentle Leader on his first day and is now a perfect walking dog when by himself. He is still a bit enamored and distracted with his fosters when on a group walk. He will figure that out for sure in short order because he appears to be a very smart dog. It will be fun to have him back in two days to see how he does with all these new things with his "new attitude"!

Updates

Hi RAGOM,

What a GReat dog and fine addition to our family Shadow is! He's put on a few pounds and is now at a good weight. We take him out on a walk nearly every day, when it's not bitterly cold. He loves everyone and has done well even in large groups of new people. We enjoyed our first Christmas with him, and he was glad Santa found him at his new home.

Happy New Year!

Shane is now up in the cold north woods of Minnesota as the latest addition to the P family.  He will have two feline friends and two little girls and a mom and dad to give him all the attention he could want... congrats to all... we will miss you!!

Update:  We renamed Shane, Shadow.  He has been enjoying our backyard and playing fetch.  He also did well on a walk last night.  He slept all night on his dog bed and has been enjoying the good life at home.  Today I took him to buy some dog food and a weigh in at our vet, he needs to gain some weight to stay warm for the Minnesota winter.  We love this new furry addition to our family and with time we are hoping that Shadow will call this home as well.

Thanks for Everything RAGOM!

The P Family

Shane has started to comfortably settle in as a member of the family. He loves his rope bone and tennis balls for play and chewing on nyla bones for relaxation. He is a very alert, happy, and perky dog who can run like a deer, usually beating the other dogs to a thrown tennis ball. So, if his age is around 5 (best estimate available), it is a very youthful 5.

Shane is easily startled by unexpected noises and sudden movements around him, but it may be our own household noises he is not fully accustomed to yet. He is in the process of learning from the other dogs how to play together. He's getting there with some gentle growling and soft barking and tails a-waggin' while the others goldens try to engage him, but he's not always sure what to do next, since the other dogs are both bigger than he is.

Shane has progressed nicely with the Gentle Leader for walking and now looks forward to a daily stroll or two around the neighborhood. He  balks every now and then whenever he thinks the rest of us should be going where he wants to be go, but he will soon figure that one out also.

A sure sign he is getting more comfortable here is his jumping up on the couch where all the other dogs like to lay when it's available. Currently, he sleeps on his dog bed and has free roam of the house, day or night. He is left un-kenneled with the other dogs while we are gone. We let him out frequently for potty breaks and he loves being outside, but always comes quickly when we call him.

Shane now eats twice per day with the other dogs. He used to be on free-feeding, but that just won't work with three other dogs around who have all received "Dog-torate Degrees" in food bowl cleaning--- no matter whose it is!
