Please welcome little Miss Annabelle Jean to RAGOM!!  She is an absolutely beautiful, 3 ½ year old purebred golden retriever.  She is a perfect 65#, and has a gorgeous light golden coat. She has been to the vet, and is now UTD on all her shots and preventatives, is heartworm negative (yay!), has been microchipped, and is on medicine for a double ear infection. She was just spayed on 8/20/10, and will follow up with the vet in 2 weeks for staple removal.  She was in serious need of a bath and grooming when she got here,  but take a look at her now – what a beauty, and don’t think she doesn’t know it!

Annabelle Jean previously had free roam on a 4 acre farm, but was subsequently surrendered to RAGOM when there were concerns that she and a fur-stepsibling acquired by marriage were not getting along. Since being here, we have only seen some nose curls to the two resident goldens, and that was within the first two days.  She responded extremely well to a gentle “no” each time it happened, and it probably helped that Belle and Bear pretty much ignored these “greetings.” The nose curls really seemed to be more a sign of insecurity than of aggression, and now that she is more comfortable in our house, the curls have stopped. She has subsequently met the non-stop parade of dogs of all sizes that live in our neighborhood, has gone leashed to the dog park several times, and is beginning to interact with the resident goofs quite nicely!

She still is, however, a bit timid and unsure when exposed to new people, and her new family will have to be willing to gently and patiently work through this with her. She loves to go for car rides, and we’ve been trying to take her with us as often as we can. (Beware – she likes the front seat!) She has had no exposure to cats at our house but had a chance to meet some briefly, and completely ignored them. We have no young children in our house, but she has consistently been very gentle with every child she has met in our neighborhood, and there are a lot of them! She adores my older kids (ages 19 and 15), and especially loves walking and running with them.

She responds very well to “Annabelle” or “Annabelle Jean”, and always comes when called in the house. She knows how to sit, and we’ll keep working on the other basic commands while she is with us.  She is a very smart dog, and I truly think she would really benefit from and enjoy some obedience training. She was previously free fed, so we are working on a twice a day feeding schedule with healthier food. She is extremely interested in people food, though she hasn’t countersurfed to date. She has only had one accident in our house, and that was on the very first day she got here. She gives no real signs that she needs to go, other than getting a bit antsy, but goes fairly quickly once outside on her leash.  She isn’t wild about going into a crate, but once there, is quiet. I work from home, so haven’t had to use the crate much, but am still putting her in it when I leave the house. I do, however, think she is well on her way to proving herself reliable with free roam. She has started to sleep with Belle and Bear, who like to spread out in different places on our main floor, but also is happy sleeping on the floor by my side.  She also recently found a favorite spot to nap in a very comfy chair, which is just fine in our house!

Annabelle Jean has an absolutely adorable personality – she’s very gentle and affectionate, however is also becoming more and more playful, and we definitely can see a special sparkle in those big, brown eyes!  She is a young dog, full of energy, and is beside herself when we go for our twice daily walks. She was never exposed to a leash before, and still can’t go without tugging or walk in a straight line with a flat leash, but she is learning! (She would probably do quite well with a gentle lead, but since she has been making progress, I’ve continued to work with the flat leash.) We have an invisible fence, so unfortunately she doesn’t have the freedom I’d like her to have since she is not trained to it and we live in a busy neighborhood, but for now, she is doing well on a leash and/or tether in our yard.

I would prefer for Annabelle to have some running room in her forever home, but don’t think a fenced yard would be absolutely necessary as long as she is kept safe and tethered until properly trained to the boundaries of her new home.  From her reaction to the retaining pond out the back of our house, I am also guessing that we might have a swimmer on our hands!

Annabelle Jean is one special dog, and though it will be extremely hard to let her go, I know there is a loving RAGOM family out there meant just for her!  If you think that you’re that family, and have been waiting for someone like Miss Annabelle, please contact your placement advisor! She can hardly wait to meet you!

Annabelle (aka Annie, Anna Banana, Bella) crossed the Rainbow Bridge on March 16, 2019. She had developed a large mass in her sinus cavity that was completely restricting her right nasal passage and pushing on her right eye. She was having difficulty sleeping at night, and we knew she was ready to cross the bridge to enjoy some running and playing in the sunshine again.

She enjoyed 8 1/2 happy years with our family. Her favorite times were hanging out at the family cabin and playing in the backyard with her 3 human brothers. We miss her dearly.

Thanks, RAGOM, Kris and Nikki, for choosing us to give her the forever home that she deserved.

It was 2 years ago this weekend that we brought Annabelle (aka Annie, Annabella, Annabelly) to her forever home with us. We are so happy that we found RAGOM when we had an empty spot in our hearts that needed filling. She has become our security system, crumb eater, companion on short trips like running errands or on road trips when traveling to the lake, snuggle buddy, and entertainer. And just like our human kids, she's quick to show her approval or disapproval of our actions. She runs to us at the door, no-holds-barred, when we arrive home from work or school, with her butt wiggling and speaking little whines of delight. And to our surprise, this summer, she showed great contempt for having to be crated while the rest of the family headed out for dinner by chewing her doggie bed to shreds! She is always right by our side, or at least letting us know that she should be if we happen to leave her behind. She is so well-behaved, that anyone meeting her now would never believe that she was a 'flight-risk' or would ignore commands to 'come' or 'stay'.

Thank you, once again, RAGOM volunteers Nikki and Kris, for helping us find Annie, or more importantly, helping Annie find us!

Annie is doing great in her furever home! She's quite settled in, and has become accustomed to the routine of the house. She knows her 'sit' and 'stay' commands, and is doing quite well when fetching and giving up the toy when asked to 'drop'. And she loves to play in the snow with the boys! Especially when they chase her or play fetch! She's getting better at staying close to us when in the front yard, and will usually come when called. She's come a long way since our first day home with her.

She's figured out that food comes from the kitchen, yummy stuff like cheese and meat, and will now accompany us while we're preparing a meal. She's good at making sure that any food that happens to fall on the floor doesn't get left there. And we've found that she likes fresh apples, oranges and beans, which is funny to us since our previous Golden wanted nothing to do with fresh fruit and veggies.

She and the youngest human in the house seem to have an understanding, and she only occasionally moans at him now. She's learned to just get into her crate when she wants to be left alone, and the young boy knows to leave her be.

We are so happy she's part of our family, and we think she feels the same way. Thanks RAGOM!!

From Annabelle's forever family...

We've had Annabelle aka Annie for about a month and we are so happy to have her in our family! We fell in love with her during that week prior to meeting her and her foster family, and she's really settled in nicely. She came to us still being treated for a double ear infection and some itchy spots on her belly from the belly-shaving she got with her spay, but our vet checked her out and she's 'perfect'! No more ear ointment or silly socks on her feet! We're thinking she's got some sort of chicken allergy, so we've taken her favorite chicken jerky treats away and she's not licking her feet as much.

She's a very well-mannered dog, and doesn't counter-surf or beg at the table. Although, we're having to do some training with the human kids so they don't pet or feed her from the table. She knows her 'stay' command and we're working on 'come' and 'sit'. She's done very well walking with the halti (gentle leader), although it still takes a few minutes into the walk before she figures that it's not coming off and she just needs to tolerate it. Our goal was to have her walking like a pro for Goldzilla, and she did great!

She loves to just hang out quietly in our backyard and watch and wait for unsuspecting squirrels to play chase. Just yesterday, we let her outside and she just stood on our deck, ears perked, watching a squirrel in the grass below. When she couldn't take the suspense any longer, she bolted down the stairs and chased that squirrel up our maple. It was so cute watching her bounce at the base of the tree trying to get the squirrel. And when the boys come home from school, she can't wait to get outside to catch frisbees or tennis balls with them. It's so fun having that puppy energy back in the house!

And she's such a snuggler! She'll curl up on the couch or on the bed right next to us, laying her head on our legs and stay there as long as she can. She is such a sweetie and we're so blessed to have her in our lives! We know it will take some time for her to feel completely comfortable here with us, and we're doing what we can to make sure that she knows she's here to stay. It took a little time, but the 3 year old human kid has now gotten used to her and has started to say, 'This is my Annabelle. I love her.' And the rest of us agree...She is our Annabelle and we love her! Thanks RAGOM, Nikki, Cindy, and Kris for helping us bring her 'home'!

Hi, it’s Annabelle Jean here for a quick update!  I was spayed 1 ½ weeks ago, and it hasn’t been quite as much fun around here, as I have to be quiet and take really careful walks. Plus – I really think it’s a lot of fun to scratch my incision with whichever paw is available, so now in an attempt to cover me up, FM and FD parade me around in silly clothes – talk about embarrassing!  Even the little girl across the street laughs at me!

However, I am starting to feel a whole lot better, and I get my staples out this week!  FM has let me start playing with my fur siblings and human siblings again, so life is looking up!

AND – listen to this!! A very special family with three wonderful boys is coming just to visit me, Miss Annabelle Jean, this Friday!!  Could they be my forever home?  Oh I hope so!!!  I promise to keep you updated!

Love and lots of kisses (because I like to give them!),

Annabelle Jean
