Chance 06-527

Profile

1/5/07: After much confusion and a long period in a boarding kennel, Chance arrived at his new foster home. Both foster parents and dog have jointly resolved that 2007 will be a better year than 2006. This sweet guy arrived with terrible ear infections, at least 10 lbs underweight, as smelly as you would ever want, teeth that needed cleaning, desperate for human companionship and a mountain of pent up energy. He is a 7 year old, intact male with a beautiful deep red color and a need to be touched and loved. His ears were so bad, we immediately took him to vet who did a good cleaning and Chance is now on twice a day ear medicine. He didn't like the vet poking in his ears but we think he was just so uncomfortable he couldn't stand them being touched. Since then we have put medicine in his ears 4 times without trouble. He doesn't like it but is willing to put up with it for some pieces of hot dog. He shakes his head a great deal and must be very uncomfortable. Despite this he is friendly and seems to like other dogs.

well it was a super bowl Sunday for Chance as he was adopted by the H family of Eagan. There are 3 reasons why this will be great home for Chance.

1 - Kathy and Roger are terrific people who loved Chance to death.

2 - Chance gets Riley, a 3 year old Westie to torment him and chase.

3 - Best of all, Chance gets Carla, the H family's wonderful 11 year old daughter, who will be his new best friend. It was love at first site for both dog and human. When Chance first met Carla, he brought his favorite squeak toy over to her and promptly played a good game of tug of war. Something, Chance had never done since we started fostering him.

From a neglected, unloved dog with horrible ear infections, to a loved member of a great family. While we were very sad to see Chance go, this is what rescue is all about.

Chance is doing great. We've learned that he loves people and especially other dogs. Whenever we meet one, he play bows, whines, and gets all excited - especially if it's a female French poodle. (We're not sure he understands the neuter business just yet.) We believe he would do fine in a home with another dog, and probably with a cat. We had our neighbors dog named Molly in the house this morning. Chance had left a little bit of dry food in his dish and Molly proceeded to eat it. Chance just watched her with a curious look on his face but absolutely no growls or signs of aggression. How many dogs do you know would let a new dog eat food out his personal dish? We left Chance alone yesterday for 3 hours, and had no problems of any kind when we returned. Even with a full trash container on the floor, nothing was out of place. He has fully recovered from his neuter and in a few more days, we will give him a bath. If he takes to a bath the way he takes to getting his ears cleaned, we may have a very wet floor. We'll let you know.

Chance has been neutered, had his teeth cleaned and has recovered very well. We are pleased to report that Chance has informed us that he is now ready to interview families that he would consider adopting. Here's what kind of home is best for Chance.

* despite being 7, Chance has a lot of positive energy, loves walks and being outside with people so a family that will regularly exercise him is key. A fenced yard is also important since he likes being out but loves to explore if given the chance.

* Chance has had chronic ear infections for years. While his hearing seems fine (try sneaking into the kitchen without him hearing) he must have a family committed to regular ear cleaning. He hates it but loves hot dogs more.

* older kids would be better since he is 7 and we have not seen him interact with children.

* we also have not seen him with a cat but considering his interest in squirrels we should assume no cats is best.

* a home committed to regular head scratching (on the dog not the people) and affection.

* a family who likes a dog with a sense of humor. Chance is not allowed on the bed but this morning when he came to wake us, he put a front paw on the bed quickly followed by the second front paw. Soon, he put one rear leg on the bed. I guess to him having one foot on the floor, keeps the rule.

Chance is a wonderful dog who is sweet and gentle. He has been excellent in the house with absolutely no problems. As you can see in the picture, when told we were looking for his forever home, Chance was so happy he started cry.

What a difference a few days make. When Chance arrived, he shook his continually and even would put the side of his head on the rug and push along trying to get relief. Now after 5 days of regular ear cleaning and medicine drops, he hardly ever shakes his head, he is obviously more comfortable and relaxed. Twice a day we shout “hot dogs” and he knows the drill. He still doesn’t like drops in his ears (picture a 3 year boy getting his face washed off) but he puts up with it in return for his treat. His ears should be fine as long as the medicine and the hot dogs hold out :) Last night, we left him alone for about an hour and when we returned, he was curled up in the easy chair sound asleep. No problems of any kind.

We have met many people and other dogs on our walks, and he does great with everyone. He tries to play with any dog he meets and if that dogs growls, Chance just walks away. He loves people but tries to jump on them and we are working on that. Chance has lots of energy and is a bit like the Energizer Bunny. This Friday, he goes to the vet to get his microchip, have his ears checked, and finally to have “The Procedure”. No more Mr. Dad for this guy! Chance is a wonderful dog with lots of energy, sweet, good in the house and an all around GReat dog.
