6/7/06: Hope is very dainty and very red. I don't know if she has had a litter of pups or not but will surely find out today. She is absolutely perfect on the leash, although not trained. Is quickly learning to wait before exiting or entering the house. Stays with me in the yard but will wander off but not aggressively. I keep her on a leash if I wander around our cul de sac as I don't trust her to come. Hope is learning her name and does return to me when called but not as enthusiastically as I would like. She gets peanut butter mixed with her food as that is the only way she will eat it (has anyone thought to develop peanut butter flavored pills and food?). Hope is totally house trained and bothers nothing that she isn't supposed to bother.

Hope is a Mississippi baby and somewhat timid. She is absolutely beautiful and lovable. So far she is learning how to fetch (seems to her the other dogs have a good time doing this), run and play and to rest and relax. She is very puppyish and I would estimate her to be around 1.5 years old. She is just learning to have fun..... She spins her tail when she runs. With our two male dogs (Marty and Parker) she is totally submissive. She may become more assertive as she matures and gains confidence.

Hope is not spayed and her earliest spay would be a week from this Friday (June 16th).

With a heavy heart, our news is that Hope, our friend and companion for over 8 years, crossed over the Rainbow Bridge today. She is missed, but she is no longer in any pain and is with her best friend, a happy-go lucky Lab-Golden cross named Marty, who crossed over 1-1/2 years ago.

Some of you will remember her as the little red girl from a Mississippi Puppy mill in 2006 who had severe heart worm, got pneumonia a couple of times from the treatments, but survived all that to be the most gentle Golden we've ever seen. After fostering her thru all that, we adopted her because of who she was. A people lover and sensitive to us beyond belief, Hope was admired every where we went. She was a Princess when she wanted to be, with us, but would make up to anyone, especially little girls!

Here is a picture of her back in 2006. Put a little grey around the eyes, and that is what she still looked like, within 5 pounds of what she weighed then. About a month ago, we went with her to Ely, staying on the edge of the Boundary Waters and watched her metamorph into a 2 year old, running up and back on the trails to Kawishiwi Falls. That memory will last forever! Here she is looking down the river- wondered at the time what she was thinking…

Jim W, lucky to have been her Dad!

Hope was just going over her e-mails and noticed that she has a sponsor - Mr. Robert T.  She said Wowlf!!!  We say WOW and Thank You Very Much.....Hope is feeling very well these days and I haven't told her yet that she is going this Thursday, 4/19, to be spayed and have her upper molars removed.  This is the end of a long series of viruses, infections, pneumonias, heartworm treatments, regular worm treatments and all.  I believe the heartworms were the base cause of her immune system problems as she has been very healthy since her last (final?) treatment.Hope loves to be outside.  She loves carrying her duck, teddy bear, soft ring toy, or whatever on her walks and almost always carries her toy all the way.  A major distraction (attraction) for Hope is mice.  She hears them under the ground and the loves to dig, dig, dig to try to reach them.  I believe she was successful one time and the mouse very successfully managed to elude her.  She does not dig in the yard but prefers the tall grass in the rough areas of our yard or along the fence lines on our walks.Hope and our other dog, Marty, have a great time together.  I actually think Hope is the alpha of the two - just because she is very petite and dainty, but Marty never messes with her.  He eats his food in one gulp and she takes her own sweet time and he never touches her food.  However, he does rule when it come to chewies.I don't know what to say about Hope that I haven't already.  She is sweet, lovable, lovely, gentle and easy.  She is a gift, and I think we are going to have to accept that gift.  Marty was a gift also.  We are doubly blessed.Hope has been a medical challenge and I believe her medical bills far exceed the $5000 mark.  There have been more then a few times when we thought she was gong to be gone and she always pulled through.  She has a wonderful heart and is a blessing on this earth.  RAGOM has provided support for her care without hesitation.  We have supplied our home and care with love and without hesitation.  I have struggled mightily about the decision to open her into the adoption process when she has completed her medical ordeals.  I have tried to be logical and sensible and can't help but feel that perhaps Hope is a gift we must accept with gratitude.  As much as I would love to place her in the "perfect" forever home, I do not have the heart to let her go.  The fact that Jim and I are both cryng should complete this story. Thanks to everyone who has held Hope in their hearts and do remember her in your thoughts and prayers this week and forever.  Thank you for all of your cash donations to RAGOM.  They do the work we all wish we could do!

Hi, Just a note about Hope. She went in today for what we all hope is her last treatment for heartworm - what a vicious and unnecessary infestation. Hope did not want to go through this one more time but the truth is she may have to even after this time. Sometimes it takes more than one series of treatments to finally rid the dog of all worms. She is currently getting the best combination of treatments that I thank we can get for her. Hope gets the monthy pill along with the periodic treatment. The monthly pill kills off the heartworm eggs and the larger scale treatment kills off the adult worms.

As I have said before, when Hope is heartworm clear, she will be scheduled for spaying and to get her upper molars removed.

I wish I could present different news but this sameness is where Hope is right now. Her imunity system is very challenged so she periodically gets viruses and infections for which she is perscribed various antibiotics by her doctor. We keep a careful eye on her and ear pointed in her direction so that we can catch these things before they get serious. This time we were very successful as she stayed healthy enough to get her final heartworm treatment in this series.

How does Hope make it through all of this..... With a trot, a hop and a smile. She loves to hunt the edge of the snow line as it meets the high grass at the fence line. Any mouse for yards shakes in terror as Hope carefully listens and then dives and digs to get to that critter. She would love to pretend it is warmer so she can be on her long tie down and watch us as we work in the yard. The tie down is still there and she walks to it every time we return from a walk.

On a walk last week she got so filthy from the melted top layer of whatever that stuff is that she had to get her first bath. She was a very good girl about her bath and certainly knew how beautiful she was afterwards.

Hope loves her stuffed animals and almost always takes one of them along with her on her walks. She carries it for her full walk and only puts it down when she has to do her duty. Then she picks it back up and continues along. When she occasionally leaves it and I pick it up, she instantly comes to my hand and takes her friend back into her mouth. Hope has several soft, squeek toys and they all are in perfect condition.

One day on our walk she found a dead bird on a branch of a pine tree. She quickly dropped her toy and took the bird in her mouth. I, of course, asked for it immediately and she gave it to me. It was completely untouched looking.

I look forward to seeing Hope run and play in a safe, fenced area. That is what she will be able to do when this is all over. Hope dreams of this as we walk and when she sleeps.

Keep Hope in your prayers and keep Ragom in you thoughts as you admire all of the wonderful things that happen to so many dogs as a result of their efforts.

Hope says HI! She is getting the first treatment of her second round of heartworm treatments today (it's really her first round of treatments since we had to delay this treatment for so long). Her prognosis depends on who you listen to. She has just recovered from a bout of pneumonia, and prior to that had a cold, and prior to that had a bladder infection, and prior to that had an infection in her upper molars--it goes on and on.

Hope is tired of all of this discomfort and when we go to the vet, she very quietly makes her way as close to the door as she can get. The successful completion of the heartworm treatment should take her out of harm's way as it pertains to her respiratory system and these infections. Hope still will have to be spayed and have her upper molars removed. Neither of these procedures can be done until she has successfully completed her heartworm treatments.

Sweetness is still Hope's presentation of herself to the world. I have never witnessed a more patient, loving and gentle dog. She still has every soft, squeaky toy she has ever been given or adopted, and they all still squeak and are fully intact. I see how much she would love to run, jump, play and hunt underground critters. She may only be able to do this in her next life. Let us pray that she is able to live a long life free of pain and limitations.

Hope is taking a rest from the active file while she recuperates from her heartworm treatment, and now, pneumonia.

It's hard to believe she is not the picture of health (because she is the "picture" of health), but she has a long way to go in her recovery. She may not recover at all. Apparently, her immune system is so challenged that she may come down with anything. Also, the severity of heartworm infestation that Hope had/has is far greater than average. Hope's environment has been very controlled. I don't know what more to do except continue to give her good care. Please keep her in your prayers as she travels this journey. She has an angel's soul.

Hope is doing well in her heartworm treatment process. I am awaiting confirmation from the vet that she can be a little more active. This weather is getting to her. She laid down in the middle of her two block walk yesterday and just took a break.

The grandchildren, ages five and seven, visited us last week for a week and hope did very well with them. She couldn't run and play like the other dogs, but sought out pats and hugs.

Hope is going to be a very fun dog to watch as she grows more confident and is able to express herself more. She loves to sniff out things in the grass and weeds when we are on our walks. She would love to run far and hard and frolic. However, she is a wanderer. I don't know if she would run off and stay but she did get picked up by a neighbor a couple weeks ago when Parker (our escape artist) managed to push open a door that was not completely closed. It gave us quite a scare but the RAGOM system worked wonders and she was safely returned to us.

Hope got away from us two other times, but we were able to get her back right away and while she was still in the yard. I think (know) she is a little bored and would benefit from being in a safe situation where she could run and play a little bit - we do not have a fenced yard. Training would also help as she doesn't always respond to her name - we are working on this. If/when the vet says it is OK we will start giving her some supervised play time in our yard - not as much fun as running free.

She is a beautiful young lady as her pictures display.

Hope is beginning her heartworm treatment and the vet says her prognosis is poor. She will be given small doses of medication over time to help ensure her recovery. For a young dog, she has an incredible number of heartworms; relatedly, she has pulmonary issues and her heart is enlarged. Hope's recovery time will be up to a month, maybe more. Keep her in your hearts and prayers, we do not want to loose this beautiful Golden.
