This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog.

Toby has made his way up to Minnesota! He was rescued from a shelter in Georgia. Not much is known about his life before coming into RAGOM's care.

The first few days at our home, it was nonstop excitement for him. Toby met my resident dogs Ollie and Mollie with no problem and loves playing with them. For the most part he will ignore the cats as he's too busy playing with the dogs. When he does take interest, he will start following them but is easily redirected when I call his name.

Toby is a growing pup. At his vet check he weighed in at 37 lbs. He has very expressive ears. They go forward, back, up and down. You might notice that his most distinctive mark, is his white socks in the front. He has a lot to learn, this young pup. I don't think he has ridden in many vehicles before. He is a little leery of my car, so I have to pick him up and carry him to it. But with time, riding in a car will be normal to him. He knows sit, but with so much excitement he doesn't sit for very long and eventually starts jumping. Right now we are slowly working with him, so he doesn't jump up on us. But with each jump he does, you can see on his face how happy he is loving his life. Toby is not 100% potty trained. He knows outside is where he needs to go potty. When all the dogs start playing and wrestling, then they start drinking water, and wrestle again, that's when an accident has happened. When they are being that active, I try to let him out every 30-45 minutes. Toby loves the toys. The first night he emptied the entire toy box. Not even my own dogs have ever done.

At night or when at work, Toby is put in the kennel. The first few nights, he would whine for a good 20 minutes. When it's time to eat, I feed him in his kennel, so it becomes more of a good thing to be in there. I think it's helping because the whining is becoming less and he's going in the kennel before I put the food in it.

Toby is young and full of life. If you are interested in this cute boy, contact your placement adviser.

Updates

Monday, March 3, 2014

Since the last update, Toby learned to go up and down a full flight of stairs. Another big accomplishment is eating time. I used to feed him in his kennel but now have moved his food bowl near the other dogs. I tell all the dogs to sit and wait, as I pour their food in their bowls, then tell them, "ok" when they can eat.

I have changed the kid requirement to 6+. Toby is much puppy, and mouthing is prevalent with him. When petting him, sometimes he'll mouth my hands. I tell him, "ouch" and he'll take his mouth away but then will try to mouth my hand again. He will also mouth one of our cats. I just tell Toby, "no" and he'll back away from her. The other cat we have, when Toby gets near him, the cat will swat at him, and Toby, who just wants to play, is confused and walks away. So Toby does read cat signals well if they let him know.

Toby loves playing with my 2 dogs. When we went to the Coon Rapids Meet and Greet a week ago, he made a new friend, Chuck 13-246, both around the same age, loved playing with each other. If Toby were to be an only dog, I hope he would have the opportunity to go to the dog park or doggy day care to continue his socialization.

Toby is continuing well with potty training, there hasn't been an accident in a week. I would expect given his young age or when adopted (change in environment) he'll have an accident once in a while. He is still kenneled when gone at work and at night. It has become more of a regular thing for him, as he doesn't whine anymore when in there. A few times I have let him have free roam at night, but being a puppy, he started to de-stuff a dog bed.

To his future home:

  • Toby will need obedience training to become a well mannered dog.
  • Toby would love to be spoiled with toys and chews.
  • Toby is letting his guard down and becoming more of a love bug. He'll lean into you for pets. He's still not sure what belly rubs are all about.
  • People that meet him say he's a sweet boy.
