Duke arrived at our home today after a transport by two wonderful RAGOM volunteers.  Thank you Laura and Bob!  I am in LOVE with this handsome boy already and he’s only been here a few short hours.  Duke is a 8 year old purebred papered Golden Retriever.  Duke was an owner surrender from an environment where he lived outside.

He has a heavy winter coat on him that is in serious need of a bath.  He’d been eating snow for fluids and was quite happy to drink an entire bowl of water when he arrived.  I can feel his ribs under his heavy coat and am feeding him small portions multiple times to begin his weight gain program (I so wish I had that problem).

He met my three dogs and foster dog Abby (08-218) in very gentlemanly fashion.   I put a gentle leader on him before introducing him to the dogs and he tolerates the gentle leader very well, hardly even notices it’s there.   After some water and food, he chilled out in a wire kennel for a couple hour nap.  He’ll be going to the vet in the morning to get him up-to-date on vaccinations and he is scheduled for his neuter on Thursday.  His personality is very gentle.  He is scared of our tile and laminate flooring but is learning to navigate without slipping and sliding all over.  Will write more as we get to know this beautiful boy.

I am letting RAGOM know of the passing of our Duke on July 1st, 2015. He left us so quickly and unexpectedly, we barely had time to say our goodbyes. It was a brain tumor that took him.

Duke was our sweet, gentle boy. He was around 6-7 when we adopted him and he was such a special addition to our family. He loved being with us and we took him everywhere we could. He would join us to watch TV downstairs; loved riding along to run errands, he joined us for camping and road trips to Canada and Montana; he joined us for hikes and snow shoe walks and was a perfect companion. He LOVED toys. He would not go anywhere without one.

When he left, a huge void opened up in our house. His presence and spirit continue to linger. I still expect to see him greet me when I walk in or be at the foot of the bed sleeping soundly when I wake up. We are thankful for the 5 years that he was with us.

While we are glad he did not suffer, we of course wanted him with us longer. RIP our beautiful boy...we miss you desperately.

In an earlier update, I stated that I was looking forward to the time in the near future, when I would be able to take my beautiful foster dog out for walks and go places and show him off.   I’m going to get one or two days to do that post neuter in two weeks, and after that his new adoptive family will be the lucky ones taking him everywhere and showing off what a handsome boy he is.  Yes, Duke met his forever people today and I am so happy for him.   From living outside eating scraps and snow, to an inside housepet with lots of activities, playing fetch, swimming, walks, etc.  From heartworm positive, to heartworm free and on preventative.  From a lonely boy, to a happy, busy boy.  My Duke has come a long way and has a wonderful, happy, fun-filled life ahead of him.  And the icing on the cake, his new adoptive mom is a RAGOM volunteer so we will get to see him occasionally at RAGOM events.   A huge thank you to his sponsors for helping Duke on his journey.
