Jack 13-119

Profile

Jack is a RAGOM boy! Life is good. :) Jack came to his foster home yesterday after spending a week with another foster temporarily until we could take him in (THANKS, Jean!!). We were so excited to meet this boy we had only read about.

Jack did not disappoint. What a LOVE! He is as sweet as they come, very obedient and just all around easy to fall head over heels for. :) Jack is a 10-year-old, very handsome, neutered male Golden Retriever. He found his way into RAGOM (along with his housemate Ace 13-120) because his family wanted a better life for him. He had become an outside dog and was only let in the house at night and put in a kennel. We thank his family for loving him enough to make the decision to surrender him to RAGOM so we could give him the life he very much deserves.

Jack loves other dogs (we have 3 residents) and LOVES kids (we have 2 young children and MANY neighborhood kids who love dogs). He loves pretty much everything and everyone. :) Especially tennis balls and people willing to pet him! He is housetrained and is trusted with free roam, he slept quietly on a dog bed next to our bed all night, he knows and responds to basic commands reliably, he doesn't beg for food, or counter surf or get into/chew up anything inappropriate, and he loves to go for walks (pulls at first). Sounds pretty perfect, right? :) It's true.... he's GREAT!

Jack has his vet check coming up on Friday... he seems pretty healthy for a senior dude. He is definitely in need of a diet and exercise plan (he's overweight by approx. 15 lbs). He also has some hair loss on his back and has a poor coat condition. All of these could be indicators of a thyroid problem, or it could just be that he needs better nutrition! We will see what the vet has to say. He also has been panting quiet a bit and it has a raspy sound I am concerned about. However, he is still settling in here and many foster dogs pant their first few days in their new environment. We will get him the full once over and I will report back to his fans.

Jack says: Senior dogs are the best kept secret in RAGOM-land! (Foster Mom agrees.) Thanks for reading! Stay Tuned!

Sweet Jackson continues to do great here in his foster home. He is a VERY easy foster dog and totally fits in as if he has always been here :) We love him!

Jack is looking great as well! I haven't had a chance to get him in to check his weight, but I would guess he is down at least 5 pounds. The hair seems to be coming back in the patches where he had the hair loss.

I don't think I have emphasized enough how much this boy LOVES to play fetch! He will go and go and go! Hard to believe he is 10 when you see how he runs after that ball :) Jack also follows all the fetch rules: sit and wait, and drop it! (Much better than his resident friends.. see photographic evidence!)

Jackson is just an all around great dog who loves everyone he comes in contact with! He isn't needy, but loves to be near. We are lucky to be sharing our home with him.

Jack is really a dream dog. He's everything that all of us love about Golden Retrievers: smart, beautiful, loving, go-with-the-flow, happy, sweet and loyal! He is a WONDERFUL dog!

Jack loves his tennis balls and loves to play fetch! We also found out he enjoys the water. When we had a few hot days last week Jack enjoyed cooling off in the kiddie pool! How cute is he?! I'll bet he would love to swim too! Maybe we will be able to take him a nearby lake someday soon and try it out!

Jackson (his full name) is a Velcro dog. We never wonder where he is... he is usually lying right at our feet (a trait I love in a dog). It is adorable and sure does make me feel loved! He is funny though, when he is ready to retire for the night he heads into the bedroom and gets nice and cozy on his favorite dog bed! If he's ready for bed he doesn't wait for us... just goes in and falls fast asleep. He is always good for a smile. :)

We attended the RAGOM meet and greet event in Highland Park last weekend, and had a blast! Jack loved all the attention and he proudly wore the donation vest (and was hard to resist... he collected some good $ for RAGOM)!

What a GREAT dog! We are having so much fun with Jack. :) He is full of personality and makes us smile all the time, a very special boy, that's for sure!

Jack's vet check went very well! All of his blood work came back within normal ranges, including his thyroid test... which means the extra weight, hair loss, and poor coat condition will most likely improve with good nutrition and exercise. Jack weighed in at 85 pounds! He should be closer to the 70 lb. range... the vet said to start with 10 lbs. and see how he looks. I think he has already lost a few pounds here! He loves to play fetch and loves to go for walks, so I do think the weight will come off easily. No one at the vet could believe he was 10! I have to agree. He gets around great for a senior boy. :) He can run, play and fetch with the best of 'um. :) His panting has also decreased to a normal amount. It was just stress... which is very common when foster dogs come into a home. So, all in all a WONDERFUL report from the doc! YAY!!

Jack does have a confession to make.... he will beg for people food if temped by a 4 year old boy eating dinner on the couch. :) I've included photographic evidence. Oh, and he also snores and chases his tail sometimes (and catches it!) ... as long as we are in full disclosure mode. :) He's quite the character!

Jack also knows how to "speak!" I've never heard him bark otherwise! We learned this by accident, and now our 4-year-old thinks it's hilarious.... and Jack is happy to oblige (Jack truly LOVES children, will seek them out and is wonderful with our kids). He knows: sit, lay down, come, shake, speak, and stay! He's multi-talented, that is for sure.

Anyone who considers bringing a senior dog like Jack into your home will not be disappointed! He's amazing and just wants to hang out with you and be looooved. And, that sure is easy to do. :) Contact your placement advisor if you are interested in meeting one the sweetest boys around.
