Jackson is loving life in his new home!
Jackson has been very busy growing physically and socially. He is expanding his palate to include green beans, apple slices and popcorn. Popcorn was a big hit on Super Bowl Sunday.
Jackson wonders where the snow powder went? He learned the joy of snacking on puppy snow cones, one of the resident's favorite treat. With the crunchy snow, he has developed a new technique, he hops to his chosen location! Quite funny. Every day he does something unexpected. If you need a laugh, Jackson is your man!
Jackson is intuitive, a special quality. A virus had me for a week and it was just amazing how nurturing he became. Quietly watching over me with an occasional sympathetic lick. If only, he could make chicken soup!
Jackson's adult size? Even the vet doesn't venture a guess. He has a svelte frame and is 25 pounds at 18 weeks. Time only will tell.
From an uncertain beginning to loving homes in Ragom, Jackson has flourished. It is amazing how resilient puppies can be.
Jackson expresses himself:
I'm back! Boy, it has been fun running and digging in the snow again! Recovery is complete. Foster mom is happy because it is hard to keep a puppy "quiet".
I helped foster mom entertain her three grandpuppies the other night. I got along with everyone, including the Weim. They all towered over me, but that didn't bother me. We had fun with tennis balls indoors, that is, finding them in very odd places. I like chasing balls, but haven't an aptitude for returning them, yet. Maybe, I will learn.
Mom says, I am very strong for someone so small. Almost 19 lb now. She thinks I could skijor some day. I love being in the snow, not like her past puppies. Ernie, Slinky and I play tag outside. Sorry, no picture. We are as fast as lightening. Indoors, the Beagle and I play tug-of-war, then I need a nap. Sleeping, eating and playing. What a life!
Jackson had his neuter surgery Friday, the 15th . He came home by 12:30 PM and then, we both relaxed. After two days, he wanted to play with resident dogs. This week, dog-on-dog play will be "on hold" for 7-10 days to assure proper healing. Poor Jackson is assigned to "helping" me in the kitchen or laundry room. Boring!
Today, the outdoors is moderating, so Jackson and the gang were busy exploring rabbit trails. Jackson was adorable digging through the snow with his nose, emerging bright-eyed and with a snow-covered snout. Sorry, no pictures.
So for now, it is low key. Perfect time for learning a new skill and reinforcing previous skills. Watch for more news from Jackson.
Hello from Minnetonka! Jackson moved to Minnetonka December 30th, so the dogs and I have been busy getting acquainted. He learned that Beau, my 11 year dog doesn't want to play. The younger adults are fair game. Slinky woofs at him and he dives in for more. The Beagle is more his own size and they will play tug-of-war frequently. Ernie doesn't want to play every time that Jackson play bows and he is properly inhibited. Learning doggie manners. Good puppy!
At first the cats were a curiosity, but now he would enjoy playing with them, just the right size. He is being reinforced to"leave it". My cats don't run away, but the older ones may hiss or give him the paw, if he persists.
Jackson is very smart, very observant! Former foster mom had been working on housebreaking and has done a wonderful job. He still has a few accidents in the house, but his young age and my signal recognition are improving every day. He sleeps in the plastic crate overnight 5-6 hours and gives out cute grunts when he needs out. Snow doesn't seem to deter his effort and he has three examples to follow, as we all go out then. If I know I will be gone more than three hours during the day, I baby gate him in the kitchen and a pad on the floor with his crate open. He has a baby's capacity and exceptions need to be made.
Jackson loves going outside! Lots of scents blowing around in those gusts. His nose is upright, but he also likes to ground sniff. Plenty of action there, too. Without a physical fence, I keep a long line on him, so he can explore. He followed the other dogs into an elderberry/grapevine thicket and we all got tangled up. Jackson shoved his nose into the snow, just like Slinky, his hero, to find out what all the excitement was all about on the hill.
I continue reinforcing "sit" and "down". "Wait" is not reliable with his attention span. We are working on "shake". "Come" works better inside than outside.
Jackson may not have the retrieving gene, but he makes up for that with super cuddles. Puppyhood is a busy stage of growth. Besides growing and learning to be a good canine, there is chewing and teething. I have a revolving assortment of toys. A trachea chew lasts a long time-if the big guys don't steal it. I reserve this for "kennel up" time.
A physical fence would be desirable to romp within and explore. A younger adult canine who enjoys playing with another dog would be beneficial. Most pups are too active for the seniors. Always remember the old adage of "a tired dog is a good dog".
Jackson will be an A+ student in puppy Kindergarten and dog training classes. A winter puppy benefits a lot from puppy Kindergarten for socialization as it is more difficult to be exposed to new and different things.
Distemper combo booster and oral Bordatella Friday . Thirteen weeks old and 17.4 lbs. The trip to the vet has not slowed him down.
If you have the time and patience to devote to a puppy, you will be rewarded ten times over with the unconditional love and companionship. If interested in meeting Jackson, please consult your placement advisor.
Now to deal with the colder winter, at least we are not going to Sunday's Vikings' game at TCF stadium!
Happy birthday to me! FM says I am 12 weeks old today. I am now 15 lbs and my fur has become shiny and soft! I am still waiting for my forever family to find me....hopefully they didn't get lost.
When I came into RAGOM, my brothers and I were in tough shape and stayed together at the foster home to get better. Then we got old enough to venture off into separate foster homes, and my 3 brothers left. Today is the day for me to spread my wings and head to my new foster home. FM and I have worked hard together but the senior resident dogs need some peace (whatever that means). So I'm packing up my blanket and favorite toys and travelling to my new foster home. I'll be a little nervous, but FM says I am such a good boy and doing so well that it is time to have new adventures. FM cried when I left, but knows I have an awesome future ahead of me!
Stay tuned for my future updates, and if you are looking for a sweet, smart, sensitive guy to add to your life.....you should meet me! I've melted my first foster mom's heart, and I bet I will do the same to you!
I just realized I haven't updated in awhile...oops. I have been SO busy! My brothers all left me one by one for their very own foster homes. Foster Mom (FM) says it is important for us to develop individually.....I disagree. I was a sad boy for the first day or so. I cried and looked for my brothers everywhere! I looked in all the rooms and in our favorite hiding spots but they were nowhere to be found. FM felt bad I was sad and told me it would be ok and that it just meant even more snuggle time for just me.
I am now 10 weeks old. I went to the doggie doctor yesterday and got my 2nd DHPP vaccination. The nice doctor gives me treats and tells me I look so much better than I did a few weeks ago. My skin is healed up and my fur is getting nicer. I like it when people notice all my hard work.
I've also been working on learning about crate training, pottying outside, what a leash is for, and how to entertain myself. FM says she is very proud of the progress I have made in all areas.....she says I am developing into a very nice pup and some lucky family will some day decide to bring me home.
FM here: Jackson is growing up, learning about life, gaining confidence, and developing new skills. He enjoys snuggling and I am happy to oblige his adorable little body. He is now weighing in a bit over 12 lbs and looking great! Other than needing to be neutered, this boy is ready to find his family!
I have had people say he is more adorable in person than in his pictures. I think because he has darker fur and is dainty in build, his photographs sometimes do not do him justice. His ears are expressive and I love the character they give him!
He is ready to meet applicants!
