4/9/07: Please welcome Kalli to our group of Golden Retrievers that were rescued from the puppymill in North Dakota.  She is a beautiful young female, somewhere between the age of 2 or 3 years old.  Kalli has the characteristics of a dog coming from a puppymill situation.  She is shy, easily frightened, and very cautious with new people and new things.  Kalli does love to get human attention, loves being petted and loved up, so that well make her transition into this big new world of hers a little easier.  First thing she needs to learn is to trust humans, then as she ventures out in this new world, Kalli will feel safe and more confident.

Kalli is finally making it on the Web page!  After coming to Minnesota, going through all the goings on at Animal Ark with being poked and prodded, washed and dried, put in a crate where lots and lots of people come and look at you, she made it to her foster home.  You can probably just imagine how scared she was.  An unfortunate accident happened and she got away from her handler - this is a very scary thing for not only the foster family but also for the puppymill dog.  In this situation it is common for a puppymill dog to start running and not stop because they are so scared, and why would the puppymill dog want to go to a human when they don't know them and don't trust them?  Kalli's foster Dad was able to get close enough to try and tackle her and that is what he did because he was afraid he would lose her forever.  Kalli's natural reaction was to reach out and bite because she was so scared.  Because of this, Kalli needed to be quarantined for ten days to make sure she had no medical conditions that might affect the person who was bitten, and she needed to be observed to see if she had any aggressive behavior.  The people at the Animal Hospital where she was quarantined fell in love with her and did not notice anything unusual, except that she was a scared dog and unsure of everyone and everything around her.  Kalli really hated to be kenneled for that long a time and she actually chewed through the metal fencing and got out of her kennel - the Vet tech was quite surprised to find Kalli on the wrong side of her kennel one morning!!! Kalli came through the quarantine with flying colors and is glad to be out of doggie jail - that's what she thought it was!!  There was found to be no medical condition and no aggression - we believe the incident was because of Kalli being very scared and stressed; she was just trying to protect herself.  With all of that being said, she has come to northern Minnesota to be fostered with another female puppymill dog, Sara 07-150.  Living with another dog that she was familiar with would help her adjust faster to her new living conditions.  Kalli has been here only four days and she has made leaps and bounds in adjusting, she and Sara are like joined twins, going everywhere together, sleeping next to each other and both trying to vie for the most attention and pets!   On Monday Kalli went to the Vet and behaved nicely.  She was not overly afraid, but was on high alert as this is all new to her.  Kalli had a checkup, was checked to see if any puppies could be felt, and microchipped.  Kalli weighed in at 48.5 lbs; she could stand to gain 8 to 10 lbs.  With Kalli being so stressed out for a while she was not eating properly and lost some weight but I'm happy to report in the last two days I've seen a huge improvement in her eating habits - this another good sign that Kalli is starting to adjust to her new life.  The Vet could not feel any puppies, so Kalli will be going to the Vet in 2 weeks where she'll be checked again to see if she is pregnant.  If she is not, she will be updated on her shots spayed.

When Kalli was sprung from doggie jail, she got to spend an afternoon meeting some new dog friends and didn't raise an eyebrow with all the doggie attention.  Isn't she a beauty?  This is Mike The Wonder Dog (left) and Kalli.
