Lucy 05-150

Profile

5/15/05: Lucy is a beautiful Golden/White German Shepherd mix with cute white markings on her face, toes, and chest. She was surrendered to RAGOM because her former mom wanted her to be in a home where the entire family loved and wanted her. We feel very lucky to have Lucy as a foster dog and are glad to have her temporarily join our family.

Lucy is nervous and a bit jumpy right now, but she is starting to relax in her foster home. She met the two resident dogs without any problems. Lucy is submissive to other dogs and has lived with cats and children. She understands that cats are in charge of the household and respects their authority. Lucy is wonderful with older children. She is not too sure about young children because they can startle her. Lucy will be going to the vet soon and we will write more after she has settled in to her foster home.

On June 22nd, 2013, God chose Lucy and we set her free. Lucy was our amazing, beautiful and unconditional loving fur child. Everything we did involved her in some way. Whether it was eating, sleeping, watching tv, taking a car ride, she was a part of us and what made us who we are today. She was our fur child, our best friend, our companion and the best dog we will ever own. She was so unselfish. She always greeted us with a toy in her mouth when we got home, wagged her tail and jumped around with us when we got excited, linked our tears (or any body part) when we cried, protected us when we were sick, worries about us when there was a storm, laid with us when we were tired and overall was there every second of every day when we needed her. We had 8 amazing years with her and we were blessed that we gave her an amazing life in those 8 years. She brought so much for our husband and I and was our true angel. During her last moments with us, we prayed together and we let Lucy know that God had chosen her that day. That she now gets to do things for herself and stop doing things for us. Even those last moments, she comforted us and wanted to make sure we were ok. There will never be another like her and we are now just blessed that we have an angel watching over us. We hope the angels can make her kongs like she likes them. She is missed every second of every day and there will always be a hole in our hearts until we are reunited again. We have many many MANY memories of her that were created with friends, family or just us. She is our angel above and we know she is running in the fields, carrying a toy and still watching over us from above.

Thank you RAGOM for gifting us with such an amazing dog. We did not find Lucy, Lucy found us.

From Lucy's forever family...

Since we have received Lucy - A LOT has changed!

Let's first say that Lucy is, by far, the most loved rescue dog. Lucy is not just a "pet" in our family - she is the heart of our family. She not only has brought additional sunshine into our lives, she has brought our family closer. There is not a moment when my husband, Mark, and I are sitting on the couch without Lucy, and our 2 cats, Kyla and Calvin. We have to always all be together, as a family, in one room or Lucy is just not happy. If one of us is not home from work yet, you can easily find Lucy because she will waiting by the front window, head through the curtains and looking outside waiting until the other spouse comes home. When she hears the garage door go up - she runs to grab a toy and waits patiently in front of the door until we walk through (we think she is thinking "look mom/dad - this is what I fetched for you!")

I am attaching many photos - but the one that is most representative of her is the one where she is laying on her back. This is her FAVORITE position!

About 2 years ago, Mark and I had a full hip replacement done on her left hip. There were complications and she has lost majority of feeling in her leg from her knee down. We have been rehabbing her for 2 years by going to physical therapy once a week and taking her to the chiropractor every 4 weeks. She LOVES to lay on her back because when she dreams, she moves all 4 of her legs and we believe that she is dreaming that she is running in a field of daisies :o) It has been a long road rehabbing our little girl, but every time she wags her tail - we are reminded that she is worth every penny - every second - every moment that we have with her!

This is a picture of her actually "laying" on top of me!
She sometimes likes to jump on me and pretend she is a 10 lbs. cat instead of a 65 lbs. dog :o)

This was 7 weeks after her surgery and we had set the couch up for her to recover on.
You can see she took FULL advantage of it :o)

Although mom is terrified of snakes...
this picture makes me think twice about how scared I really am :o)

Mark and I never imagined the life we would have after we got Lucy. We never had imagined that we could love a dog as much as we do. Our lives are "complete" because of Lucy and we cannot thank RAGOM enough for giving us the opportunity to rescue her and give her the life she deserves....and give my husband and I the dog we always dreamed about.

Thank you!

Hello,

We have had Lucy now for the weekend and I cannot begin to tell you how much we LOVE her!! She fits just PERFECT into our home! I've attached just a few pictures and will definitely be sending more. We are so lucky to have found Lucy and lucky for Lucy to have found us. She is definitely a momma's girl (it's hard not to be when you have a mom who spends over $200 on you the first day she has you). We haven't had any problems and don't anticipate any. Kyla and Calvin are still not quite sure of her, but Lucy is so wonderful...she just sits there and lets them sniff her or look at her and she doesn't even react!! I know once they get used to her, they will all probably end up playing together. I know that Lucy is happy with her new home, I can see it in her eyes and the way she constantly wags her tail with happiness. She deserves all the love that we give to her though because she gives it right back. I just wanted to check in and tell all of you THANK YOU SO MUCH for bringing Lucy to our home...without RAGOM...we would have never found our perfect Lucy Lou!!

Thanks again,

Shelley and Mark G

PS. I can't wait for all of you to see her at the picnic in September!!

Lucy has had a great week. Everyone she meets just loves her. They think she is so well behaved and they like that she does not demand attention (unlike my two dogs). She is also the perfect size, around 70 pounds. Everyone thinks Lucy is adorable. She can beg for a treat and it’s really hard to resist her. She also has a pink spot above her nose that is very cute. When Lucy has visitors, she greets them nicely, comes up to them occasionally for pets/kisses, and then keeps herself busy by playing with her toys. Lucy has picked out her favorite toys to take along to her new forever home. Now she just needs to pick out a forever family.

Lucy is getting along better now with my female dog. They seem to have worked out their differences and are even starting to lie next to each other to sleep. Lucy likes to chase the other dogs around the back yard, but will not wrestle or play tug with them. She still prefers to interact with people more than with dogs, but she does seem more comfortable now living with dogs. So, I think she would be fine with an older dog or one that will not pester her to play. Lucy also loves children. She has lived with children and seems very comfortable with children five years and older.

Lucy is very low maintenance and is a sweet, quiet, and well behaved girl. She would like a family that would take her for walks with a Gentle Leader. She would also like a home with lots of tennis balls and squeaky toys. Lucy likes to play catch but does not bring the toy back (that’s why she needs a large supply of toys for you to throw). She can make some amazing catches and would be happy to show off for any interested families. Lucy likes playing in our doggie wading pool and would probably enjoy swimming. Lucy is having a great time at her foster home while she patiently waits to find her new family.

My two dogs spent a few days at their grandparent’s house and Lucy loved being the only dog here. She was so happy receiving all of the attention and ran around with her tail wagging the entire time. She suddenly started playing with all of the dog toys and chewing on the chew toys. Lucy was a bit cranky when the other two dogs came back home. Lucy tolerates my male dog, but does not really interact with him. She does not like my female dog and prefers not to be in the same room with her. All of the dogs are fine together when they are eating, lying on the deck, playing in the yard, or taking a walk. But, I think that Lucy would do best as an only dog and would really flourish in her new home if she received all of the attention for herself. She is also doing really well riding in a car. It takes her about ten minutes to stop whining and pacing and then she will lay down nicely for the rest of the ride. She has been accompanying us for car rides as much as possible.

Lucy went to her vet visit and she was nervous and whined during the ride. She got into the car just fine and settled down after a little while. Her former home said that she was in a car during an accident and was not comfortable riding in cars anymore. Lucy had her shots updated, was microchipped, and tested for heartworm (negative). She did not appreciate the vet tech trimming her nails, as she does not like having her feet touched. But, Lucy forgave everyone afterwards and gave them kisses and accepted some treats.

Lucy’s former family said that she was diagnosed with mild hip dysplasia when she was young. However, her former family, the vet, and I have not seen any symptoms. Lucy also chews a little on her legs and paws, but they looked just fine during her exam. So, Lucy is now taking a supplement that may help with any hip problems and her dry skin. We gave Lucy an oatmeal bath and a conditioning rinse. She did pretty well and only squirmed around a little bit. Lucy likes being brushed and she looks really beautiful after her grooming.

Lucy has been through a lot in a very short time and she is adjusting well. She spends most of her time sleeping, looking out the window at birds, running in the fenced yard, or playing with tennis balls. We took all three dogs for a walk for the first time together. Our two dogs use Gentle Leaders and Lucy really pulls, so we tried out a Gentle Leader on her, too. She played “bucking bronco” all the way down the street. Then Mac 03-146 started copying Lucy and we had two bucking broncos on our walk. Towards the end, Lucy walked very nicely with her Gentle Leader (Mac did not).

Lucy is very well behaved and mellow in the house. She is used to a fenced yard, but would also do fine on a tie-out. She knows basic commands, usually stays off the furniture, and rarely barks. She is used to free roam in the house when she is alone. We tried out a crate and she was fine in it (although it is not necessary). She also respects baby-gates. Lucy likes to chase balls but doesn’t like to bring them back. She plays quietly by herself or with people. She has not tried to play with the other dogs, although she will sleep next to them. Lucy likes to be petted and give kisses, but does not demand attention. Please email Placementatragom [dot] org if you would like to meet this sweet girl.
