This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog.

Lucy, welcome to RAGOM! Lucy is a purebred Golden Retriever, 4 years old, 70 pounds, spayed, up-to-date on all vaccines, heartworm preventatives and Frontline. She is one beautiful girl with long dark hair!

Lucy came to RAGOM because she began having issues with the other female dog brought into the household and they could no longer reside together. She’s adjusting nicely in our home and is well-mannered, well-trained, and has an overall great disposition.

Observations:

  • She loves human contact. When not nudging you to pet her, or rolling over for a tummy rub, she’ll be nearby on the floor quietly resting or chewing a bone.
  • Housebroken; stands at the door and barks once when she needs to go out.
  • Eats well, is treat-motivated, does not beg at the table.
  • Free run of the house when we’re home.
  • At night when she’s ready to sleep, she goes into her crate with the door left open or she’ll follow you to the bedroom and sleep on the floor.
  • Does very well on car rides.
  • Knows the commands "sit," "stay," "come," "off."
  • Walks beautifully on a Gentle Leader.
  • Rarely barks (has never done so on a walk).
  • She’s very calm (except when strangers come to the door).
  • Likes to be bathed and brushed, but doesn’t like her nails cut.
  • She will sometimes curl up on furniture, but gets off when asked.
  • Has shown no separation anxiety, and is crated 1-2 hours at a time when we’re away.

Forever Home Requirements:

  • She enjoys our daily walks (3 miles), which should help her regain her girlish figure by shedding 7 pounds, and will need to continue some daily exercise.
  • We use a long cable tie-out to actively play fetch with her outside, and since she shouldn’t be left alone outside, we do not think a fence is required.
  • She would do best in a home with no other dogs or cats.

Lucy is a very beautiful dog who will thrive in a loving home with lots of attention and routine. She will make someone a wonderful Golden companion!

We've enjoyed Lucy's presence for about 6 weeks now, and we've discovered more of her great qualities and needs for a family. Lucy needs:

  • A very active family. Lucy loves going on long walks (minimum 3 miles a day); hiking; swimming; playing fetch. She's very athletic and nimble, and could probably be a short stop on a professional baseball team! Ideally a family that is into outdoor activities (camping, hiking, boating, etc). She becomes very bored and antsy if she can't get outside.
  • A confident dog owner. Lucy is drawn towards, and responds better to, individuals who are more of a leader. She's very much a pack animal and needs to know where she stands in that hierarchy.
  • Along with that confidence, a patient family. She does have dog reactivity issues, so she needs a family that will continue consistent training and praising. She's very smart, so we believe her training really will fix these issues. She's actually shown reasonably good behavior around our neighbor's large dog between our shared fence, as long as she's supervised.
  • She has good callback, and will hang around you without wandering far. However, she is very reactive to birds, small critters, and dogs, so a fenced-in yard is a must and she should remain on-leash for walks to prevent bolting.

Lucy has a morning routine of gently nudging you awake when it's time to get up (she loves sticking to a routine). She also has a very silly side, and will do random, funny things like hopping in our bathtub. Swimming and playing fetch in the lake is her greatest love. She's definitely an active and playful dog!

We've been so happy having Lucy in our home and part of our lives. Lucy has shown us such a wonderful personality, coupled with intelligence and playfulness. She loves going on long walks (about 2-3 miles a day) and definitely needs a family that can engage her youthful activity level. She walks beautifully on a Gentle Leader, but she will pull if wearing just a regular collar. She's strong and energetic, and absolutely loves playing fetch, catch, tag, and tug-of-war.

She's very intelligent and observant. Lucy has even picked up on subtle words and cues, including when we say "bedtime," as she'll grab a small toy and head up the stairs to her sleep pad in the bedroom and settle in for the night! She's also very gentle and has a calm temperament (we can easily bathe her, wipe her muddy paws, check for ticks, groom her, etc).

We're continuing her reflex training to other dogs, and she's getting slightly better. At this point, she seems to tolerate larger dogs (at a distance), but not the smaller yip breeds. We continue to keep a fair distance between her and other dogs just in case, but we think this may improve with time and consistent training.

Here are some pictures on the way to a weekend camp trip:

Lucy is currently being co-fostered in two homes. This arrangement is necessary because neither foster can keep her continuously. So, Lucy has gone to Kathy's home when Bob and Mary are traveling, and vice versa. Lucy has done well in both homes, however. She loves her extended families very much.

Lucy is working on her reactive behaviors with training exercises prescribed by a professional trainer. For those of you that don't know much about reactive dog behavior, it simply means that Lucy doesn't get along with other animals. This also means that Lucy needs a family that doesn't care if she ever meets another dog. No dog park or doggie daycare is best for her. While this may seem limiting, it really isn't hard to manage. We only have to look out to make sure we give a wide path to approaching canines on our daily walks. It also means that when we have family visit with their dog, we have to keep them separated by a baby gate. Lucy upstairs and Redford downstairs works fine. We should also add that it would be great if Lucy's forever family would take her to "reactive dog" obedience classes. These classes are usually available at places that offer dog obedience training.

We need to emphasize that Lucy is a wonderful, loving dog to her humans. She does well with kids and adults. She likes our friends and does great when they stop by unexpectedly. No advanced planning required with this girl. Lucy is the easiest foster dog we have ever had in our home and will make a great addition to the right home.

Lucy is a returning RAGOM dog: purebred Golden Retriever, 5 years old, 60 pounds, spayed, and up-to-date on all vaccines. She is one well-mannered, well-trained, very beautiful girl with long, dark hair!

Lucy was adopted into a home without a fence and located near a dog park. She began displaying reactive behavior to various dogs, and did have an altercation when she got off her leash. Lucy was lucky enough to come back into RAGOM, whereby she was taken to a dog training center to help with this reactive behavior.

Weʼve fostered Lucy originally, as well as prior to her training, and then afterwards. Weʼve never experienced any issues, even though we walk her daily in a metropark. We always utilize the Gentle Leader, give wide berth to any approaching canines, and distract her with yummy treats.

Forever Home Requirements:

  • She would do best in a home with no other dogs or cats.
  • A fence would be awesome, and she needs her daily walks of 1-3 miles.
  • Her forever family needs to be slightly dog-savvy and committed to continuing her reactive dog training so she can become the best dog she can be.

Lucy is a very beautiful dog and so very easy to have in a home. She will thrive in a loving home as an only pet with lots of attention and routine. She will make someone a wonderful Golden companion! If you feel Lucy could be right for you, please contact your placement advisor.
