Marti made the mistake of her life and it may cost her that very thing. Marti was staying at a friend's home while her family was away and found her way to a tasty stolen treat--rat poison. Marti was a beloved member of her family and they immediately sought vet care. When it was apparent that she would need round the clock care to combat the poison, the family brought her to the emergency vet. Over the coming days, Marti seemed to be fighting off the poison and the family tried to take her home to care for her. She took a turn for the worse and the family returned to the emergency vet. With mounting bills into the thousands, the family struggled with their love for Marti and their ability to continue. Marti's prognosis was guarded and she was given only a 50-50 chance of surviving. The vets told the family that her care would take several more days and weeks. Distraught, the family made the most heartbreaking but loving decision for their girl. Marti was surrendered to RAGOM.Marti16270c1.jpgMarti is a 10 year old spayed Lab--an honorary Golden girl! She has helped to raise the family's young children--the youngest is now 5. They taught her many tricks along the way and she is a very smart loving pup! Everyone who has met her at the Animal and Emergency Referral Center in Oakdale is in love with her! Marti's survival spirit has brightened over the last day or so and she is eating and seeking attention from her caregivers. Marti is not out of the woods. The rat poison has impacted her kidneys. Toxins must be removed from her blood with medications and IV fluids around the clock. We are hopeful that the fluids will be weaned over the coming days and she will be able to enter a foster home. Marti will still need to be monitored closely with lab work and fluids every day or so over the next weeks. If her lab values take a turn for the worse, she will need to return for 24 hour care. Marti won't be available for adoption until she is healthy. Please send good thoughts and prayers for this senior girl! And if you are able, please consider sponsoring Marti or helping in any way to offset the care she needs.Marti16270c2.jpg

Marti is doing great! She had labwork rechecked over the weekend and again on Monday and things continue to look stable! We have begun to reduce some of the medication that she has been on to help support her body through the recovery process. She is continuing to be closely monitored by her fantastic care team, but is defying expectations and we couldn't be more thrilled! Her next check-up is scheduled for Thursday. Paws crossed we can discontinue another one of her meds and space her recheck blood work out even further.

A very special thank you to Marti's new sponsor, Karen Bishop! Your kindness and generosity mean the world to us. Dogs in medical crises like Marti wouldn't have the chance to LIVE without people like YOU :)

Smarty Marti sends her love to all of her fans and supporters, and thanks you very much! We will update again soon ❤️

Sweet Marti has good news; She has been discharged from the hospital and has moved to her foster home! She is still under the very close care of veterinarians and is being monitored daily. So far, her blood work looks stable. We are told, that often with this type of toxicity, lab values can vary from looking good one day to concerning the next, requiring additional hospital stays... even following discharge. Which is why we are checking her blood work so often. The longer she goes with stable labs, the further apart her check-ups will become. This is a long process, but we are very hopeful she will recover with continued specialized care. Don't stop sending all your love and well wishes, they're working and we appreciate them!! Also, we want to sincerely thank Marti's very special anonymous sponsor!!!! RAGOM would not be able to say YES to dogs like Marti without people like you. Your support means everything, thank you!

Marti has fit in here at her foster home seemlessly. She is easygoing and sweet and very, very easy to love! She clearly enjoys the company of children and gravitates toward them, it's pretty adorable. It is easy to see that Marti has had a life of love and good care. She is impeccably trained and obedient, is at a perfect weight, has a gorgeous coat and is a champion cuddle buddy! She gets along well with the resident senior Golden, and our Bloodhound foster and even our resident 10 month old Golden teenager (if dogs could could roll their eyes I'm pretty sure that would have been her reaction to exuberant puppy boy Bruno:) )

Marti is enjoying her snuggle and couch time and we are enjoying her! We thank you for all of your love and support and will continue to keep you updated as she makes her way through this journey.
