1/23/07: Introducing Max the Mighty....mighty handsome, mighty sweet, mighty manners.....well you get the pic. I picked Max up from an outlying vet that was kind enough to hold him for me til I could get there. Due to circumstances Max's family had to find him a new home. He had been an indoor at one time, then the new family got him and he has been an out door dog for the past 8 months.

Now about Max. He is 13 months old, beautiful teeth, soft coat, wiggles his whole body in joy, loves to play tug and fetch, is great with my cats and gentle with my old resident Reba. Oh my gosh he is a doll and I will be so happy once his eye is taken care of. It just runs and runs and he rubs at it which makes it more irrated. He's about 61 lbs of muscle, great legs, nice sized feet, blocky head, big chest and just prances when he walks.

I picked Max up about 5:15 Tues. eve. He rode the the entire hour's drive home sitting on the seat never making a peep. A few nudges for a pet. He went to the vet and got a quick bath. I got him home, cleaned his ears, cut his nails and whenhe was dry I used the furminator and brushed him. He is sssooo sweet. Kept him on lead and in the kitchen just to see if the past boys left any invitation to him to mark. Nope. Did his business outside, not an accident all night. Went to bed, invited him up, laid his head on the pillow next me and proceeded to start snowing. He stayed on the bed for awhile, then got down and slept on the floor. Quiet all night, got up this a.m. and nothing chewed and no accidents.

Max has been to the vet this a.m. and had his exam, bloodwork and updated on ALL his shots. His left eye has entropian (sp) which is when the eye lashes grow INWARD......oh so painful. His eyes (both) are red and so we put him on a steroid so he will be ready for surgery on Thurs. At that time he will be neutered and have his eye done. He was wonderful for his exam etc. Good news is no heartworm or lyme and I dropped off his "other" sample before work. He would not go potty at the vet.....soon as we got home out he went and did his business.

I have gated him in the kitchen area today while I"m at work, so will see just how good he is and how good the kidneys are:) He loves the kong and bone for chewing and of course he has to have a ball....thought he should take one with to the vet. Last night he came up behind me and I hear this low growl.....I turn around and here he is with a booda tug ready to play. Loves to play, but isn't crazy and settles down very nicely. While Max was eating last night, Coulter my young cat, came up behind him. Max turned around, Coulter stood up on his hind legs and proceded to sniff Max right on the nose. When he was done he walked away and Max went back to eating. He has respected the baby gates, no jumping or crawling under. Max knows his name and to come and sit and takes his treats very nicely.

This is one Mighty great dog. So if you are an approved app and been looking for that wonderful new family member...look no further, he is the real deal.

It is with broken hearts that we inform you that our beloved Max passed away on 12/27/12. We had recently discovered he had a liver tumor. We are so thankful for our almost 6 years with Max. He came to live with us when he was 14 months old after losing our dog Nugget 6 months before. After Nugget died, we wondered how another dog could begin could live up to his standards. But Max quickly and easily filled the void with his unique personality, and did just that.

There are so many special and funny things Max did. It is sad to realize I will not be able to remember every little detail of every little thing he did that gave us such great joy. He had a special greeting he gave us when we got home with a mouth full of toys he was proud of as if they were all brand new and he couldn’t wait to show them to us. He was a faithful walking companion, enjoying two walks a day almost every day rain or shine. We figure he walked 3,200 miles in his short time with us. He had a funny way of scratching his sides by rubbing up along the furniture as he walked along, doing a quick turn around as if to chase his tail and walking back to scratch the other side and repeating it. He had a favorite ball but really loved all of his toys no matter how long he’d had them or how many ears or legs they had lost. His guard dog skills were only good until a stranger came into the house. He had a big threatening bark at the door or window but once the door opened, it was as if a long lost friend had arrived and they too got his special greeting. He always enjoyed his trips up north to the woods where he had several buddies to pal around with. They would all chase tennis balls and sticks and walk the trails through the woods with us. The top of his head was so soft as were his ears, and his tongue was like the finest sandpaper. While we scratched his ears, he’d say thank you by giving a couple of licks to our arm or wrist. He could get excited and run around like a puppy and then also settle down and nap or rest until the next exciting thing came his way. He had such an expressive personality.

We’d like to think he had a happy life with us and we know we were blessed to have gotten this special dog. He was such a lesson in how to be happy in life.

Max, we miss you terribly and will always love you. You are forever in our hearts.

WOW, what a week it has been. Max came into my life on Tuesday and here it is Saturday the 27th and he is on his way home with his new mom and dad. This boy has had a busy week. He came into foster, went to the vet one day and was updated on all his shots. Next day met his future forever mom and dad. Went back to the vet and was neutered, and had surgery on both eyes. Came "home" on Friday to rest up and this afternoon his new family, the "O" family came to bring him home. He was keeping a close on eye on me, and I know he will be confused for a couple days, but will adjust quickly. The fence guy has been out and Max will be happily cavorting in his very own fenced in yard very soon!! His parents are wonderful beyond words. Upon meeting Max for the first time they brought squeaky tennis balls, doggie and cat treats for the residents. Today they brought me a lovely book, "Marley & Me" and a beautiful and touching homemade book marker. I just had to share. Even that was not enough for them, they gave a very, very generous donation to RAGOM to help with the expenses of all Max's vetting.

As a foster all you can hope for is a loving family for your foster, everything else is extra. In the last 10 days I was blessed by finding 3 forever homes and receiving flowers from Comet's 06-495 family and the gifts from Max's family. No one expects anything more than a good home for their fosters, but when lavished with gifts, how can we not share our joy and graditude. I have been a very lucky foster mom in that I have families that still send pictures and updates, give PetCo gift cards, coffee, wall art and a beautiful Golden Retriever key chain. The list goes on. But in the end the most important thing is that I believe each of my fosters went to the best possible home they could. AND that is what it's all about.

Max was here but a very short time, but was one of those dogs that just melted your heart and took a piece with him when he left today. His mom and I cried...moms are like that. 3 wonderful boys left my care in the last 10 days, and each was blessed with a wonderful family and home. I miss "the boyz" and Reba will be a bit lonesome, but today the sun is shinning and life is good.

Good bye, Mighty Max,!!! Thanks for 5 wonderful days of the wiggleyest butt, cutest little play growl and generous kisses, cuddles and love. I will miss you and know I'll see you again.
