Paige is a sweet 9 year old GR mix who had a rough start in life. For her first year she belonged to a man who frequently abused her and was one those people who should never have a living animal. At the age of one she was pregnant and kicked out the house. She was surrendered by the owner because “she didn’t play and just laid around all day.” RAGOM took ownership of Paige in 2004. Paige had her puppies and by all account was a wonderful mother. She was then adopted by a wonderful lady and had a happy home for the next 8 years. Unfortunately the owner recently had a stroke and can no longer care for her. Paige was well loved, and very confused by the rapid changes in her life. But once a RAGOM dog always a RAGOM dog and we are now pledged to care for her and make sure she has a good life. She carries some baggage from her first year such as being cautious around new people until she trusts them and then is fine. But despite her rough beginning she has a kind heart and in the right home would be a great dog.

UPDATE - August 13, 2012

Paige arrived at her foster home on Aug 11 and was understandably nervous. But she knew her FM and FD since we had visited her in boarding. After three days she has settled in nicely and is very comfortable in her new home. This foster home is probably the kind of home Paige would do well in. Two older adults with no kids, no other dog, and no cat. Both of us are retired so someone is home most of the day. Generally a quiet place without a lot confusion. Here’s what we know so far.

  • Most importantly for us, Paige is completely house broken.
  • She has a VERY high prey drive for squirrels and you need to be cautious introducing her to other dogs.
  • She loves her walks and does very well on a flat collar lease.
  • She is not a Velcro dog and her favorite spot is by the front hall window on her bed watching life go by.
  • She is very sweet us, loves patting and is a very low maintenance dog.

As we get to know her better I think more of the real Paige will come out. Right now I can tell you she is a very contented dog.

Paige (04-181) here. I just wanted to write to all my followers and let you know that I found my forever home!! This marks the second time RAGOM has placed me in a wonderful forever family and I am so very grateful. Not to mention all the fantastic foster families I have had over my many years as a RAGOM dog. Thank you to everyone! And especially to my foster mom Sharon who I know must be missing me terribly! My new house had some wood laminate floors which you might spot in one of the pictures but new mom Karen spent Sunday laying carpet squares down and it is now much easier for me to get around (especially to get up off my bed - which I do love). New dad John takes me for nice walks and is very patient while I stop and sniff everything. I need to get to know my new surroundings! I even met a dog this morning on my walk and there was no problem. Nose sniffs and butt sniffs were exchanged without incident. I haven't ventured upstairs to the bedroom yet (even though new mom tells me she made me a lovely bed up there) so my mom has been sleeping on the couch next to my doggie bed. She plans to sleep in her own bed tonight though, so I will have to go up those stairs if I want to sleep with mom & dad. The cat has stayed upstairs so far and has pretty much decided that the upstairs is hers and the downstairs is mine. Mom says that is not okay though. We are not a "segregated" household and everyone needs to feel comfortable roaming free. Mom and dad both say the cat will adjust to me. She is older too and needs time acclimating to change. That is all for now. I will send more updates soon. Thank you so much to everyone at RAGOM. You are the best!!

Mom says if I am going to post my own updates, I have to learn to take "selfies". what do you think? Remember, I am just learning this technology.

Paige on a walk around the lake, savoring the last day of Fall before the snow flies. For about the next 36 hours we'll be getting anywhere from 7-12" of wet, heavy snow. The temp is gonna drop to below freezing. Here we go again. She's doing great.  We've been walking everyday.  Paige loves to ride along in the car so, I take her along whenever I can.

Hi from Paige on this beautiful September morning.  Feeling good after she had her nails clipped and a bath.  Then a long walk in the sunshine to dry off.  We've found another park to explore that's close to our new location in Minneapolis.  We noticed she is showing signs of arthritis. Paige started taking 1/2 tablet of Deramaxx once a day.  She loves her daily walks, so feeling good makes them all the better.  Paige needs to be held on a tight leash when she sees other dogs because she does have some aggression.  There are no other dogs in this foster home.  I think that she is happy to be the Queen of the castle.

Looking good after a nice summertime walk in a park by the lake. She likes to refresh herself by wading in the water and taking a long drink. Life's little pleasures. Such a sweetie!!

Paige's birthday is 01/30/2004. She is a very sweet dog. She has bonded well with me and my friends and family. I take her almost everywhere with me as long as it is safe for her. I love to look at her smiling face in my rearview mirror. She hangs her head out of the window. Paige is very protective of me. No one gets in without her approval. She makes herself known. We go for our daily walks. Now that the weather is warm, we go on short walks a couple of times a day. We have a couple of parks with lakes she likes to wade in. Everything is good with Paige.

We want to thank our friends who have sponsored Paige. She is a great dog!!

Finally, Spring is really here.  We are back to our daily walks and happy to be getting into a good routine of exercise again.  Paige also enjoys daily rides in the car when I take her with me to get her out of the house.  We start with a walk on one of the local nature trails, then she accompanies me while I run a few quick errands.  She loves to be anywhere I take her.  Always happy to get home, she walks over to her bed and lays down for a good nap.  When the weather gets a little warmer, I'm going to take her to Petco for a self serve shampoo.  We did this last year and she completely relaxed in the tub while I indulged her with a warm bath and a good brushing.  My daughter, Maggie, stayed at my house to dog sit Paige while I was on a vacation.   Maggie told me that she enjoyed Paige a lot and that she was an easy dog to take care of.

Paige is in good health, not on any medications.  She is on a Fromm dry dog food diet and has a normal appetite and thirst.

Paige and I want to thank our friends who have sponsored her.  Thank you so much!!

After another week of more snow and subzero weather the cabin fever has definitely set in.  This morning it was -15 degrees outside.  It's even a chore to walk through the deep snow just to take care of some business.Finding a ray of sunshine on the floor in the afternoon feels good.  Taking a nap and dreaming of the beautiful nature walks we seems like a good thing to do today.Paige is a great companion.  She is truly a sweetheart and isn't demanding of much at all.  Just the simple things like being with me, rides in the car, walks in the park, a comfy bed and two meals a day.  She gets plenty of hugs and treats too.  Good girl!!

Hello from Paige on this very cold January day.  We've been able to enjoy some pleasant walks on some of the warmer days this winter.  She likes to be in the same room with me or at least positions herself so she can see me.  Paige is sweet that way.  She is observant of me as I prepare her food and when I put her dish on the floor, Paige waits for me to give the cue that it's ok for her to eat.  She's gentle when I give her treats.  That shows she has great self-control too.  She gets up in the morning when I get up (even if I sleep in) and goes to bed at night when I do.  She's very easy.  I really enjoy her company.

I just leave her alone while she is eating or has a chew bone because there is some resource guarding.  It's not a big deal because I have learned how to read her signals.  This is why I think it is better to place her in a home with no other dogs or small children.  Cats seem to be ok.

I talk to her and give her positive reinforcement.  She's a great dog.  Paige would be a great companion for just about anyone.

Paige was seen by a vet last week.  She is in very good health.  After a couple of rides in the car and a brisk walk today, looks like it's time for a nap.  That's all for now :)

Paige is still doing great here living with me.  I think that she probably has always been extremely protective of her people, she bonds.  Paige makes it known that she is present when someone approaches me.  She will bark and warn, but when I tell her it's ok, then she backs down. That's how she does it.  So I feel very safe with her here.  On the other hand, Paige would do best in a home without any other dogs because she acts the same way towards them.  She had a previous foster who had resident dogs and having Paige in the mix was a little bit of a problem, but that foster loved her a lot too. She is a sweet, obedient, loving and perfectly behaved dog otherwise.  That's why I believe she ultimately needs a home with only people and no other dogs.  She doesn't mind my cat though.  A fenced in yard would be awesome, but she is not a runner. We go out for walks around the neighborhood and around the lakes and parks.  She's good on the leash.  She only pulls hard when she sees another dog, so I offer her a treat to distract her and we turn and go in the other direction.  She is a very good girl.  I take her everywhere with me.  She loves to ride in the car with the window open and her head looking out.  Paige is in great health too.  She sleeps all night without interruption, has a normal appetite and is very healthy.  Paige has never done anything destructive.  She's a sweetie.

Ragom foster dog Paige enjoying what all dogs enjoy - putting her head out of a moving car's window. She came along for the ride to Iowa State University.

Paige and I have relocated to a new home in Edina.  It was no problem moving with her.  I take her with me almost everywhere.  She is a very good guest when we visit other people.  Paige is the only dog in this house and she gets along great with my 10 year old cat.  She enjoys her walks around the neighborhood and at one of the lakes at a park.  She likes to wade in the water.  Paige is really a very, very nice and well behaved dog.  She has bonded with me and is very protective of  me.  She will bond with the right forever person or family too. I like that about her.  No health issues at all and she is taking no meds.  Good eater, not a counter surfer or garbage can digger.  Paige is a real cutie and an all around great girl!!  She was previously fostered where there were other dogs and because of that Alpha personality I think she would thrive best as the only dog in her adopted home.

A wonderful foster, Paige is a 9 year old female golden mix and in excellent health, no meds, about 60 lbs.  She is a former ragom girl who was adopted by a woman who had her since 2004.  Paige was surrendered because her owner went into nursing care.  Back in Ragom, Paige was fostered by a family who had 2 resident dogs, but it wasn't all peace and harmony because she wants to be the Alpha.  It was painful for this foster to give her up. They cared for her so deeply, but only wanted what is best for her. They are keeping in touch.

At my house, Paige is the one and only dog and she has adapted and bonded really nicely with me and is not a threat to my old cat.  Paige gets walks at least once a day, sometimes I take her to the lake.  She likes to walk around in the water and cool off.  She's pretty good on the leash, likes to smell and sniff around.  I have to hold on tight when we walk past other dogs, but that's the only time she pulls.  I take her to my dads house when I visit him.  She is great in the car.  Understands commands.  Very polite and sweet little girl.  Her very first owner wasn't the kindest.  When she was about a year, she had puppies and he basically kicked her out.  From what we understand, Paige was a wonderful mother who took awesome care of her pups.  That's when she was adopted by her family who kept her all those years before they sadly had to surrender her back to Ragom.  I love this dog.  She is a ver very affectionate, easy going, good girl.

Paige is doing very well and has really started to bond with us and blossom as a dog. Whereas she used to spend all her time in the front hall away from us, she now comes every night to tv room, takes her spot on the couch and spends the night with us. She remains cautiously friendly with new people. She even is beginning to be somewhat calm around dogs she has met before. New dogs remain a problem and Paige continues to be unsocial even when the dog is sending all the friendly, no threat signals. We give her a small amount of medicine for her arthritis and it helps tremendously. No other problems of any kind for sweet Paige.

Paige continues to do very well in her foster home. She is more frequently leaving her favorite spot and coming into the living room to be with us. She even has been sleeping in our room from time to time. She remains uninterested in toys or playing with anything. Her job in life is to hunt. She gets very excited when it is time to walk. She watches intently for squirrels and loves to stick her head into bushes looking for anything that might pop out. She is eating well but unfortunately she has still lost a little more weight. Still not much progress with meeting other dogs. She gets so focused on the other dog that even her favorite chicken treats are not enough. So we continue to avoid those situations. Occasionally you get an insight into some of her fears. The other day while walking, I lifted my arm over my shoulder to scratch my back and she just cowered away from me thinking I was going to hit her. So it’s slow with arm and hand movements. But she is learning to really love nice head rubs and ear scratching.

Paige continues to do well. Her most favorite spot is on her orthopedic bed in the front hall watching life go by. But every so often she joins us in the TV room for a little loving time with foster mom.

Paige has settled into her foster home very well and is extremely happy. In the morning, when I put her leash on, she gets so excited she does a little dance and wiggles her body around. We have found out many great things about Paige and unfortunately a couple of items that need work.

First the good things.

She has no problems with regular household items such as dishwasher, vacuum, and so on. Also when walking she does not seem bothered by normal street noise, sirens and so on. She has met numerous people including men in baseball hats and doesn’t seen to show any concern. After a couple of days of not eating, she now eats her food (Proplan Chicken and Rice, weight management) and does not seem overly interested in people food. We have left her alone for up to 2 hours with no problems. When we return, she is sleeping on her favorite dog bed. She also loves riding in the car.

Now for our couple of problems.

She is the most squirrel obsessed dog I have ever seen. This is not really a bad thing but you need a firm grip when she sees a squirrel. More concerning is that Paige can get snarky around dogs. This seems to be a dominance thing not based on fear or aggression. We are working on this but she needs slow introductions and I would not trust her off leash around another dog especially a small one.

She remains a sweet, gentle soul who asks for very little and loves being patted.
