Piper 12-346

Profile

Please welcome Piper 12-346 to RAGOM. Piper is an eight year old Golden Retriever/Yellow Lab mix. Piper was lovingly surrendered by her one owner family who wanted her to have more people time. The owner’s daughter developed asthma and Piper had spent much of the last year away from the family. Now, due to divorce and extra jobs for the father, they decided it was in Piper’s best interest to find a family who could give her the time she so deserves.

She is a healthy, 65 pound spayed female. Her coat is golden/yellow blend with slight feathering on her chest and hind quarters. She us up to date with all her shots and is on heartworm and flea preventative. Here’s what we’ve learned about her:

  • She lived with two large cats and got along with them.
  • She is gentle and affectionate-while we don’t have small kids, I will not be hesitant to introduce her to children of any age.
  • She is friendly with our resident golden and was gracious when she met small dogs on our walks and at the vet.
  • She sits when told, but that seems to be her only command.
  • She seems to be crate trained- she is crated right now while we are gone and will go in it for naps on her own.
  • She likes Kleenex and I’m sure her nose would find things on the counter to be irresistible so we are keeping a close eye on her with these things.
  • Her first few nights, she needed to be on the foot of the bed at night, but lately she is comfortable sleeping on a pillow in the bedroom.

We look forward to providing you with updates on Piper. She’s been such an easy addition to our family- I know she would be an easy addition to your family as well!

Piper turned 14 last week. She keeps on going. We still walk a few miles a day, and she still eats everything in sight. Best buds as always.

Piper turned 11 today (July 1). We are doing quite well. We walk for 2 hours a day, and Piper eats whatever she can find along the way. She has the run of all the couches and beds in the house.

It's been almost a year since Piper has arrived, and we have become quite the pair. We have our routines down pat. We go for several walks a day, and we adjust to each other's quirks. Since moving to Minnesota from South Dakota, Piper has acquired some allergies, but we have those under control. She turned 9 recently, and is going strong.

Time for Piper’s weekly update and what a week it’s been! After returning from our travels to Iowa last weekend, we came home to a wonderful e-mail. Placement had sent us information on someone who wanted to meet Miss Piper!!! She not only got a vacation, but a potential adopter all in a day!

You all know the process...After reading all the home visit notes and application information it looked like a great match, so we made contact with Ed. After our conversation, he was ready to MEET Piper. Yesterday and today Ed came to Sioux Falls to visit Piper. Thanks for driving all the way from Coon Rapids!! It was an instant love connection. I knew that Piper really hit the jackpot when she went to crawl into his lap and he welcomed her so lovingly!! She trusted him enough to try that and he reciprocated. I knew then to get the paperwork filled out.

This morning, Piper became one of so many RAGOM dogs who found her forever home. Ed, you and Piper are starting a great new journey in your lives and I’m so happy and thankful for you both. Don’t forget to update the Happy Endings site from time to time.

We’ve had Piper for two full weeks and she is a keeper. We really have been able to transition her into our home with very little difficulty. The only “negative” for us is we have trained our dogs to stay off furniture and Piper lived in a home for 8 years where she was allowed to be on the furniture. She doesn’t get on it when we are home now. If she tries to sneak up, we simply tell her down and she gives us the “oh darn” look and goes to her bed or floor. We gate her out of “the good furniture” part of the house and cover the other furniture. Let’s review the bullet points:

  • Housetrained- check
  • No resource guarding-check
  • No anxieties-check
  • Low energy-check
  • Affectionate-check

To these bullet points, we learned a little more as I traveled alone with Piper and our resident dog to my family in Iowa. Piper loves to get in the car…riding, however, is somewhat anxiety provoking for her. She panted and sat the whole way there (5 hours). On the way home however she was able to lay down and sleep for quite awhile. She does very well with small children. My nieces were around her all weekend and gave her quite a bit of attention. When Piper had enough “play time”, she came over to me and communicated with her ears and eyes that she had enough. It was a great learning opportunity for all of us as I showed the girls what she was doing. She even managed well with my parent’s resident dog, a rescued sheltie with some of his own issues! The yard is not fenced so we used a tie out with my supervision. She had no issues or stress about this. Quite frankly, I don’t think she would leave my side if she was off leash, but no chances were taken in this new environment. I have to keep her safe for her new forever home…is that you?

Enjoy the pictures of Piper’s big weekend and yes…she got called up on the furniture!

Just a big lap dog

Piper has been with us for just over a week and we couldn’t be happier to have her.  She has transitioned so well from her previous home of eight years into this new home.  Her restlessness has subsided and she is relaxed and comfortable in her surroundings.  She even ventured out to a RAGOM event sponsored by the City Parks department and did very well with fellow Sioux Falls foster pups Megan 12-156 and Sweety 11-175.  She met lots of people and educated them about RAGOM and how to become an adoptive home or a volunteer.  She would like to give a shout out to Deb and her husband.

Here are a few more updates on what she has shown us…

  • There has been no sign of resource guarding
  • She has not done any counter surfing, but she does keep an eye out for some dropped food and will wait patiently for the last bite of peanut butter toast in the morning

  • Housetrained…no accidents.  She goes to the door to be let out.
  • We are still crating her while we are at work, but she is getting free roam for 2-3 hours at a time now that she and our resident dog have settled in together.
  • She was allowed on furniture in her previous owners’ so we are limiting her furniture exposure with gates when she has free roam.  We get an “F” for consistency when it comes to keeping her off the end of the bed at night-her favorite place.

  • She doesn’t really “play”- she’s not attracted to squeaky toys, balls or soft animals.  She did finally discover a “tough” toy that with some coaxing, she fetched and actually brought it back several times.  She seemed to be enjoying it!
  • She walks well with a leash and flat collar
  • Loves car rides
  • While she looks like a lab, she has the heart of a Golden and will be your Velcro girl to the end.  Even getting ready in the morning requires Piper’s presence

More updates to come…this weekend she will meet our young nieces, including my niece Piper, so we’ll see how she gets along with younger children.
