Redgee introduced himself to us this last Saturday, May 11. He is a 10 year old fluffy, 82 lbs red Golden Retriever. Redgee pretty much minds his own business when around other dogs. He prefers to spend time with people over other animals (but is not aggressive towards other animals). He looks so much bigger than he is because of his lovely red fur.

Redgee was surrendered to RAGOM because his previous owners were moving and couldn't take him with them. After being shifted to different locations he ended up with us and now looking for a new forever home.

In this few days that we had Redgee for he has met our neighbors, groomers and vet, they all agree that he acts way younger than he is. He is very energetic and playful. He is such a gentleman and never jumps on guests. He recognizes and listens to commands such as stop, stay, sit and lay down.

In our experience so far, Redgee is well behaved when taken on walks. He would not try run or pull.

Well, this is all we have to say about this big boy. Stay tuned for more. Also, did I mention that he is also a super awesome model. Check out his pictures.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Redgee!

It is hard to believe this amazing dog has only been with us for 5 weeks - it seems like he has been with us forever.  He is very adaptable to his new home and fur-brother.  They are starting to get along more like siblings now - barking contests, vying for affection from family members, and snuggling together on the family room couch.  We've seen more of a playful side to Redgee since he's settling into his new foster home; he likes to "tease" his fur-brother Guiness with jumping up on the bed to sleep in Guinness' regular spot for bed time.  After a few minutes, Redgee jumps down and let's Guinness take his regular spot and Redgee gladly lies down in his regular spot next to FM side of the bed, on the floor.Redgee is simply one of the sweetest dogs we've ever met!  Do not let his "senior" status deter you from considering him!  Quite simply, Redgee is happy being wherever and doing whatever his people are doing.  If you want to relax and watch TV, he'll snuggle with you on the couch (even let you use him as pillow for a while!).  If you feel like going outside to play, he's totally up for it!  Taking a walk?  He's first in line for his leash and has been handling up to a 3 mile walk daily with FD and fur-brother with no problem. If you are looking for a wonderful, sweet, loving dog to bring into your life, you can't get much better than our Redgee!!  Contact your placement advisor if you would like to meet our sweet Golden Boy!!

Redgee moved to his new foster home two weeks ago, and has become an instant member of our family!  Our resident RAGOM dog Guinness has been a bit territorial with some of things (toys, bed) but welcoming to his new foster brother for the most part.

There isn't enough good things that we can say about this sweet, sweet dog. Redgee has the most loving and cuddly personality!  He is very "chill" and happy to just be wherever you are.  He seems to be a bit more attached to FM right now, but happy to take affection and attention from anyone in the house.  He is a delicate eater, not what we are used to with Guinness who inhales his food in about 3 seconds!  There are no issues with whose food dish belongs to who, and no aggression issues.  We did have a skirmish over 3# of frozen ground beef that the Redge man managed to take out of the kitchen sink (he is a counter surfer - don't leave a pan of brownies, frozen ground beef, or any food unattended on a counter or table top!), but they worked it out peacefully.  Redgee is feeling comfortable and "at home" in his new foster home, showing no signs of anxiety with his new surroundings.  Redgee benefits from having an adult and a homeschooled teenager home with home all day.  The best forever home for Redgee would be one that has someone home for a good portion of the day, and also a quiet environment with no small children.  He is comfortable living with another dog in the house.

And so, the season is changing, as it so quickly does here in Minnesota, and Redgee is SO excited for the cooler weather!

He just spent the last month and a half with my son-in-law's family who was staying with us, visiting from overseas, and they have never lived with dogs, and had no exposure to them (dogs are not common pets where they live).  Having no exposure to our furry friends, one could imagine that meeting an over 80-pound dog like Redgee could be a little bit intimidating!  But, as he has done with all of us, he found a permanent place in their hearts.  Here is a picture of our boy with my son-in-law's sister:

As you can see, he has proven to be a great dog, despite his size, for people who may be nervous around dogs, or have never been exposed to them before.  His calm demeanor on first meeting him makes him very easy (unlike our resident golden, who jumps on people as if her life depends on it...Redgee gives a MUCH better first impression!  Ha ha.).  I think he will miss them, now that they have returned home.

Another update, our Redgee made a short appearance at Goldzilla just this past weekend!  He did great.  He barked and howled along in excitement with the other goldens, he lapped up any attention he received, and he thoroughly enjoyed all of the praise.  If you were there, and you liked what you saw, please do not hesitate to make arrangements to come pay Redgee a visit!  He will be a great companion for anyone wanting an oversized lap dog that just wants to hang around.  If you like goofy and fluffy, Redgee is your guy!

Stay tuned to see pictures of Redgee frolicking in the fall leaves (unless, of course, he finds his forever home before then ;-)

He is waiting patiently for you, his forever owner, wherever you may be.  Please, don't be shy, Redgee would love for you to visit and get to know him!

Well, we are at about a year with this lovable senior, and what an honor it has been, getting acquainted with Mr. Redgee.

Here is what my daughter, my son-in-law, and I have learned to be true about Redgee:- We all agree that it will be difficult to part with him when he finds his forever home, he is very hard not to love!- BUT, we KNOW that SOMEONE is out there who is a perfect fit for this handsome gentleman, and we will be SO happy for him when that person makes him/herself known.  - That someone would be looking for a dog that will provide wonderful companionship, and will gladly follow him/her to the ends of the earth, should Redgee be asked to.- That someone would NOT be looking for a dog that greets them at the door by jumping on him/her, running around, etc.  Redgee, although a lover of walks, chew toys, and playing, tends to be more of a calm, easy-going presence than a hyper one.- Redgee counter surfs, and likes to dig in open garbages.  There is so much to smell and explore, he just can't stay away from them!  He would probably benefit from a home that does not allow him access to anything he shouldn't be putting in his mouth.  We have easily remedied this by making sure anything on the counters in the kitchen cannot be reached should he stick his cute, curious brown nose up there, that all garbages are covered, and that any plates of food within reach are under close supervision.   He also respects baby gates, which we have in one doorway, and he has not tried to enter that room the whole time he has been with us.-  Unlike our resident golden, Redgee has not had any storm anxiety whatsoever; thunder and lightning don't seem to phase him in the slightest.- Redgee does just fine with our resident dog, who is another golden, but he should be just fine alone as well.  - He would probably benefit from having a home that allows him to roam around (i.e. small apartments may not be the best fit for him).  - He should definitely have a fenced-in yard that he can wander around in. Although very calm, he appears to enjoy moseying around from time to time.- He should NOT live with cats, small dogs, or small children.  - He loves walks, and would benefit from at least a short walk every day.  He walks very well on a gentle lead.- He is HILARIOUS with treats.  He understands "sit", "lay"/"lay down", and "stay", but he has a LOT of difficulty staying for very long.  He just wants that treat SO BADLY, he fidgets and talks to you!  So silly.- Although his teeth look to be rather worn, they are powerful, so rubber toys seem to be the best bet for him.  He also loves to chew on tennis balls, and does not seem to destroy them.  Heavy-duty ropes seem to work well, too.  Most other toys, he will destroy pretty quickly, he is a very determined chewer!  But, it is GREAT stimulation for him.  Give him the right toy, and he'll chew and chew until he tires himself out.- I had no idea dogs did this until I met Redgee: he snores!  It is SO adorable.- Ever heard of a "helicopter tail"?  See this passage from http://www.petbehaviorchange.com/11novcolumn.htm:

'The friendliest of all canine tail wags is what's known as the "helicopter tail." In this wag, the tail moves loosely in all directions in random patterns around the back (high, low, and side to side), and often the whole back end is wiggling with it (the ever-adorable "wiggle butt" we all know in our own dogs). This is the tail wag you are likely to see when your dog greets you after a long day at work. It is also the tail wag we frequently see among puppies. Being an inherently social species known for their unique ability to bond to humans as well as to fellow dogs, this tail wag has evolved as a gesture of friendly greeting and affiliation ("I see you, I like you, I am no threat to you, let's say hi!") Among a dog's many other assets, it is this tail wag that has brought dogs into our hearts and hearths for thousands of years!'

This is the kind of tail wag that Redgee welcomes me with every morning when I wake up, and every evening when I come home from work, and every person who walks through the door.  How can you say no to that????  If you'd like to see it in action, I'd love to introduce you to him!And now, time for some pictures. Here is how he looks when he's pooped out from a hard day of relaxing, eating, walking, playing, and relaxing some more (I know, such a tough life, ha ha):And here is Redgee when he's ready to explore every nook and cranny of the back yard:Got a comfy couch?  Got a few comfy couches?  Don't worry, Redgee will test each of them out, to make sure they fit his standards:MMmmmmm, buttered popcorn:Redgee's the one on top, relaxing on the deck on a warm summer day:

Come on, how can you NOT love a dog this big and fluffy???Having a luau?  Don't worry, Redgee will be there right next to you, making sure you're having fun!

Redgee wanted to tell everyone how incredibly happy he is that spring is finally here!! Our sweet boy just loves his walks and even the whispered word 'walk' will bring about gallops of joy to the nearest door with the silliest grin that makes his people laugh out loud! I've included pictures of him sitting on his 1st park bench of the season, while his people take a short rest. Is he adorable or what??!!

His leg seems to be healing OK, but the scar tissue came back and there is a 'bump' that may be permanent. It does not appear painful and he's leaving it alone, unless boredom sets in and he needs something to lick. A spritz of 'Bitter Apple' takes care of that. His next and hopefully last, medical procedure, will be the removal of a broken tooth. If he were human, it would hurt terribly, but he doesn't seem to mind it- we just don't want infection to cause a problem, so off to the vet for more surgery. Once the tooth is extracted, he should be ready for that forever home.He is truly a joy to foster. if you're looking for an  senior who loves his people, his walks, his naps and his food, then he's the one for you.

As of February 19, Redgee came back into our foster care.  He was adopted for 3 weeks and we want to thank the SO for giving it a good try.  Unfortunately, he began to exhibit anxiety issues that culminated in him breaking a window and cutting his leg.  So, he is now back in our care.  He is the same sweet boy he has always been, and we are honored to have him again.  We will do another update after he has had time to settle.  In the mean time, keep sending good vibes for his injury to heal ASAP!Here's our definition of cute (in the pictures with two dogs, he's the one on the right):

Who could say no to this face???  Redgee is eagerly awaiting whatever Santa has to offer him.  Perhaps a forever home?  Only time will tell...

Well, Redgee continues to be an awesome dog.  He is snuggly, fun, obedient, and generally very agreeable.

Case in point:

Hi Redgee fans! It's been way too long since I've shared an update about our awesome boy, Redgee. This is in part because we've been trying to wait until we've figured out what's going on with our boy. In past updates we've referred to him as our 'fur-butt' and talked about what a lovely coat he has, so we became concerned when what we thought was a lot of shedding turned into TONS of shedding - OK, not tons, but quite a bit. He is a fur-butt no more!! With so much of his furr shed, easily over 50%, it looks like his legs are tall and now I refer to him as daddy-long-legs!! It has cost RAGOM quite a bit of money to have tests done to try and figure this out, so if any of you Redgee fans out there have a real soft spot for our boy and a few extra dollars in your pocket, he sure could use a sponsor or two about now. Most recently, he was tested for Hypothyroidism and then Cushings Disease, but, thank goodness, that was negative for both- YEAH! but...it doesn't help then, to explain the loss of hair. Of course our Redgee boy is still adorable and smiles his lopsided grin whenever you look at him and he still wants to love you up as much as you can take :)

He still can't seem to resist counter surfing, even though I'm sure he's trying! Example: In the morning, both he and my resident dog, Emmy get a kong with Peanut Butter (this is after they eat their breakfast), while I make toast for myself. My toast was ready and I left the counter to go 8 feet into the other room to get their kongs and he just couldn't resist taking 1 piece of my toast gently off the counter, even though he knew the peanut butter kong was coming. :) It was hard to be mad, because he was sooo happy with tail wagging eating my toast on the floor. It's like he's telling me, "Look, foster mom, you know I can't resist, why did you leave it for me?!!" What a fun personality our Redgee has. Now we just need to figure out how to get his fur to come back in time for our MN winter! The vet is going to go over his case with an internal medicine specialist next week and we're hoping that she may have an insight into this issue. Redgee willl be coming to the RAGOM Goldzilla event on September 15th and would love to meet any and all adults or teens, so be sure to look us up!

Sunday, July 14, 2013

Wow! It's been a long time since we've given an update on our wonderful big boy, Redgee, so we thought we'd let our Redgee fans know a bit of what's going on. Redgee was adopted for 2 days and came back to us. I don't know all the details but it appears that as soon as Redgee arrived at his new home, he got into the garbage and when the SO tried to pull it away from his mouth, she was bitten. I think it was a high stress situation for the SO and Redgee and she felt it was better to send him back to us.

Because of the bite, he is waiting for a behavior evaluation to determine what the best adoptive home situation might be for him. Since coming back to us and before he was adopted, Redgee has never bitten or even growled at us. He has given a warning growl to our resident dog, when she tried to sneak his ball away from him, but it was only a warning to back away from his toy and our resident dog understood and waited her turn for the toy!

Also since he's been back in our care, the vet noted ear infections that we are treating as well as an enlarged spleen and so an x-ray of his spleen was done. Yippee!! No mass was found, but then an ultrasound was done  to see if there is anything smaller that the x-ray could not pick up. Again, good news!! No cancer was found, but instead it appears the the ultrasound detected the possibility of Cushings Disease. So now our patient big boy has to go for yet another test to finalize that diagnosis and figure out how best to help him. Please keep positive thoughts for this awesome fur ball!

Because of these health questions, we are waiting for the behavior evaluation . Once we have him on the right path to feeling better, we'll hopefully get that done and finally be ready for him to find his wonderful 'forever family'!

Since he's been back in our care, he continues to look at us with his silly grin, and is very intent on laying down as close to his people as he can get- including in the middle of the kitchen floor ( of our very small  kitchen) while we cook or do dishes! He loves to cuddle and will sit for petting until your arm gives out :)

We are absolutely honored to foster him and look forward to helping him find his forever home. Please continue to watch for our updates so you'll know when he's ready to meet people and show off what a great big fur ball of love that he is.

Redgee is on the right

Tuesday, May 28, 2013

In the last couple of weeks, here is what we have gathered about Redgee in a nutshell:

- He LOVES his humans!  If you pet him and you stop before he is ready, he will nudge your hands with his nose until you continue.- He LOVES to snuggle!  He will sit near you if you call him to you,  and if you say, "Redgee, lay down," and pat the floor or wherever you want him to lay, he'll plop right down and eagerly await belly rubs/cuddling/whatever you have in store for him!  He loves being in close physiocal proximity to his humans.- Redgee, although a calmer dog (perhaps largely due to his age), the three of us in the family agree that he has a LOT of energy for a 10 year old.  He very much enjoys fetch, walks, and playing in general.- He is in great general health, the vet had nothing to report to us when we took him in for a check-up, other than that he seemed to be a very healthy 10 year-old gentleman.- Redgee has no food aggression that we have noticed.  We give him space and feed him in a separate room from our resident dog, and he eats without any issue.  We have scratched his hind area while eating, and he just kept eating (no growling, nipping, etc.).  - We have given Redgee full run of the house, even while out, and he has had NO accidents or problems.- Redgee absolutely loves attention and will follow you everywhere when he desires it (can be a great velcro dog!), and so we agree that he would thrive in a home without other dogs.  - BUT, he and our resident dog are very peaceful with each other, and have no issues, so if there are other dogs, he should be fine as well (the only reason he might enjoy being the one and only is because of his love for attention, there are no dog issues we have seen, he actually plays with and really seems to like our resident dog!)- He is an excellent walker with a gentle leader.- Redgee knows and follow basic commands like sit, stay, and down.- Redgee will gladly sleep with you in your bed if invited, but will be just as happy to sleep on the floor next to you and keep you company.- Redgee should go to a forever home without small children.  They seem to make him a little too nervous.- Redgee needs to go to a forever home without cats.- Redgee is a counter surfer, but if you catch him with something, he'll nicely trade something he shouldn't have for a  treat!  He's shown no aggression when we touch his mouth/pull things from his mouth.  - Redgee also likes to dig in the garbage, so it would be a good idea to have garbages with lids, such as step trash cans (where you have to step down to make the lid pop up).Redgee continues to be nothing but a big, lovable, SMILEY ball of fluff, as he patiently wait for his forever home. Please take a look at the lovely model shot that Redgee gave us:
