06/08/2017:

Ricki 17-117 is a ten-week-old female who is one of eight purebred Golden Retriever puppies brought into rescue from a Kansas breeder. Ricki had her wellness checkup and was given her age-appropriate vaccinations. Her stool check was negative for any parasites, and she has been microchipped. She is recovering from a respiratory infection and is doing very well. She seems to need to have her ears cleaned weekly. She weighed in at 20.2 pounds and is all puppy legs. She will be spayed later in June.

Ricki is a calm, gentle, loving, and happy puppy who loves to play with her one-year-old Golden foster brother. She chases the cat, but more to play than for prey. She loves to meet other people and has been good around children. She loves to run and play in the yard and likes to “garden” a bit. She is a typical puppy who will need patience, training, and love. She kennels during the day, but being a puppy, she will need a plan to make sure she gets a potty break every four hours. She is doing well on potty training, but she still is a puppy, so expect accidents. Puppies eat three times a day, just like humans, so a plan must be in place to give her lunch, which is very important to her growing body.

Ricki is a little snuggle bug and loves belly rubs, especially when she wakes up in the morning. She sleeps through the night, but loves to sleep with humans. She goes to sleep around 9:30 PM and does not wake until 6:00 AM. When she wakes, she rolls over for belly rubs and eases into the day. She plays with toys, loves to go on long walks, enjoys time in the water at the lake, and travels well in a car. She likes to snack on sugar snap peas, baby carrots, zucchini, frozen sweet potato strips, and blueberries.

Puppies are a lot of work, and much like a newborn, they require observation and guidance as they explore and grow. Puppies chew, so they must have many chew-appropriate toys as options and all puppy-interesting items must be removed from their reach. Obedience training is a must, as it is a necessary tool for both of you, as well as a bonding experience for communicating in positive ways. She is an eager learner and has already learned to “sit” and “come.” She is working on “stay” and “leave it.”

This little nugget of gold found her way to the mother lode of the Golden Life. Her love of littles will be well fed with her new fur-ever family. She will be loved to the moon and back and will be making lots of sweet memories with the R. family.

Ricki 17-117 here! Checking in after a busy week! I am proud to say that I am going on fifteen weeks old and am potty trained! Apparently, that is a big deal with my foster family, as there is a lot of cheering each time I go! I definitely know the command “go potty,” which I do and usually causes a lot of hullabaloo!

My foster family has been very busy making sure that I am something called “socialized.” I have been around lots of people of all ages and many different kinds dogs. My social life is quite full! I keep trying to show them what a good girl I am by being so good with very small children. They bring me to the neighbor littles (ages 2-6) several times a week to play. I roll over on my back and let all of the littles pet my tummy. I don’t jump on littles and take treats so nicely from their hands. I am not a puppy nipper. I think I should tell my foster family that having a home with littles would be fun.

I am doing well with my commands. I come to my name and also to a hand command. My foster mom has also taught me “down,” “off,” and my least favorite, “leave it.” I even learned “army crawl” with a little help! I walk well on a harness and I would like an active family that will take me for walks, or to a park to play.

I have a pretty laid-back personality and have no storm or fireworks anxiety. I would make a great hospice/nursing home visitor or therapy dog. It’s not only because I am laid-back; it’s also because I secretly really love getting pets!

I will be having something called a “spay” on July 10th. My foster family told me that we can start to look for a fur-ever family right after my spay!

Ricki 17-117 here, checking in on what my foster mom says is the longest day of the summer! I love summer because I love being outside. I love to garden with my foster mom. Sometimes, I garden without her. She planted peas. (They were delicious!) She also planted green beans. (They were also delicious!) There’s a spot of tomatoes, too. (Not a fan!) My foster mom doesn’t let me in (what is left of) the garden anymore, but I can say that I excel at digging. This is something that she says my fur-ever family should know about me!

I am really smart. I am learning so many new things. I love to have a nightly walk and then a little dip in the lake. If the lake isn’t available, I am happy to play in my blue pool. I love water! I am very good in the yard with just a leash on and I follow my foster family around wherever they go.

I just went to the vet and had my age-appropriate shots. I weighed in at 25 pounds and I am all legs. I had a double ear infection, so I am on ear drops, but I am healthy and gaining weight, so daily walks will be very important with my fur-ever family. My kennel cough is gone. I will be spayed on June 26th. I am continuing to work on potty training. I just have an occasional potty accident in the house. I do not indicate very well, so my foster family takes me out a lot! I go four hours with a dry crate and I go eight hours at night snuggled in with my foster folks. I am a very quiet sleeper and wake up gently to belly rubs. So, if you are looking for a snuggle bug to share your bed, I am your girl!

I love being around my two golden buddies. I love other dogs and I love to play and romp with them. Although I don’t need another dog in my future home, it would be great to have another dog around, especially if they like to play. I don’t resource-guard. I have no storm anxiety. However, I am starting to counter-surf. (My foster brother may have coached me on this.) My foster family is trying to correct this habit. I am a happy little girl who is good around people and children. I’m a bit shy, which looks like I’m trying to snuggle, but actually, I am a bit scared, so understand that introductions need to be slow and patient. My foster brothers dote over me and I enjoy being their little princess!
