Toby (Brandee/Brando 06-124)

Profile

3/25/06: Brandee has made it to Apple Valley after a VERY long journey - a huge THANK YOU to the rescue group who blessed us with her this morning. Brandee is from Mississippi and was found on her own under a garbage heap so we felt she needed her very own Guardian Angel. I am lucky enough to welcome Brandee to Apple Valley and to be the Guardian Angels mom. We lost Brandee the angel about 2 years ago so I know she will watch over our little Mississippi baby very carefully.

Now for the funny part ? After waiting patiently to get our hands on this girl ? we find out she is a HE....how many times has this happened to me?? I know a bunch of the foster parents out there will be rolling with laughter, because it happens to me all the time. So, Brandee is now BRANDO! Oh well, let's talk about Brando for a few minutes.

Brando arrived at 8:00 am on Saturday the 25th of March, all the way from Mississippi. He is a rescue because of the after effects of the hurricanes that took place last year. A high percentage of the dogs are not spayed and neutered in MS and as a result many strays are wandering around and subsequently a puppy boom is on. Brando went to the vet immediately upon arrival to MN because we were so worried about him. When the rescue group got him on Wednesday he was infested with fleas. The rescue group got him Frontlined, etc., so we hopefully won?t have to deal with too much of that here. However, we have done lots of precautionary measures for our Newfs and for us two legged people. Poor Brando is so flea bitten that he has many open sores and lots of wounds. The vet feels Brando is about 13 weeks old, so we are making his birth date December 24, 2005. He weighed in at 25 pounds so once he is healthy he should be a big boy.

As you can imagine we don?t know a whole lot about him because we just got him into our hands, so watch his update, and yes I am sure it will be updated on a daily basis for a few days at least.

If you are interested in adopting this little bundle of joy and have been approved for adoption of a RAGOM dog, please send placementatragom [dot] org a note. If you are not approved ? send in an application so we can get this little boy into your home.

Dear RAGOM,

We adopted Toby (Brando #06-124) from RAGOM via Connie & Rick V in May of 2006.  We are sad to report that we had Toby put down on July 3, 2018.

Toby was a rescue from Mississippi in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.  He was in pretty sad shape when rescued, but RAGOM nursed him back to health.

When we met him at the foster home it was “this is the dog for us”.  He was a little shy at first when we brought him home.  But we gave him the time and space to make his own decision.  Soon he was part of the family and household, and making friends around the neighborhood.  What started out as a 35 pound puppy grew into a 90 pound “gentle giant”.

There was a hint that he may not like being in water after his experiences in Mississippi.  That was not the case at the lake, as you can see from a few pictures below.  We have many memories of Toby prowling along the shore avidly “fishing”.  Never caught anything, but loved it.

He was our constant companion both at home and at the lake.  Toby was the greatest dog ever.  He gave us 12 years of love, fun, excitement and pure joy.  We miss him immensely.

Thanks for letting him into our lives and hearts.

Can you believe it is one month today that we got Brando? Pretty cool, he is looking so good. I made another vet appt for him on Friday, just to check out the pads on his paws, they still seem a little swollen so I want to make sure we have taken care of that before he meets his first family on Saturday morning. But, shhhhh, don’t tell Brando because we want him to be on his best behavior. Okay, well, on Brando best behavior, whatever that may be at the time. So wish him luck and hopefully he will be sending a note to George in MS telling him all about his new family. But hey, if it does not work out and you have been approved for adoption of a RAGOM dog, you could have a shot at this little boy, so please email Placementatragom [dot] org. If you are not approved – send in an application so we can get things moving!

Take note – I got a decent picture of Mistee and Brando sharing the crate – of course Mistee woke up and is ready to bolt, so I got the picture taken just in time.

Another day in the life of Brando. Brando had a little poop accident today while I was at the Y doing my daily exercise. It has been 3 weeks since he did anything in the house and then he only peed once, but still he is being a good boy and working hard at learning all the good behaviors a dog should know. He is afterall still a puppy, so this may happen for awhile yet....or maybe this was his last oops :) He still wants to jump up when you first walk in the door. But if you do stop and make him sit he will sit to get a good petting and love.

Someone asked me last night how I felt about the dog being on the couch. I have to say, that we put a nice big blanket on the couch so the dogs – yes, hairy black Newfs included, can get up. We take the blankets off when we have company and then the dogs know they are not allowed. I think for Brando it is going to be important he be allowed to snuggle with you. This does NOT mean he needs to sleep in your bed. He likes his crate or the dog blankets at night just fine. But Brando loves to lay right next to you while you are watching TV or reading the newspaper, so you can occasionally pat him on the head and tell him what a fine boy he is. Does this make sense at all?

So tell me now, is he the type of boy you are looking for? Do you want to meet this little K9, that will sit on command, 99.99% potty trained, and an overall good disposition? I know he would love to meet you! If you have been approved for adoption of a RAGOM dog please email Placementatragom [dot] org. If you are not approved – send in an application so we can get things moving!

Brando and Jadee

Tuesday, April 18, 2006

Brando continues to flourish, however, last night Mistee, his best bud got hurt in the back yard so she is on bed rest and Brando does not understand why they cannot play. So he is heartbroken and pouting! In fact he was so mad at me he decided to go into an open closet and take out a brand new deodorant container and play with it. I just looked at him and he brought it over. I felt like he was telling me I stink and that is why he got it out!

For the past 3 weeks I have been desperately trying to get a picture of Mistee and Brando sleeping in the big crate, but Mistee is so scared of anything in your hand that as soon as I get the camera she bolts out of the crate as fast as she can. This picture would be adorable!

Brando is pretty small for being around 5 months per the vet. I don’t think he will surpass 50 pounds. He is pretty leggy right now but he is very solid and in great shape. His paws are still a little swollen but almost back to normal and we go in for the next worming dose tonight.

I am trying to teach Brando how to play ball, but because none of the Newfs like to do that, we are having a tough time with the return part but we will keep working on that. Also, when we first get home Brando gets so excited that he wants to jump up so we are working very hard on “four on the floor”. As long as we say “Brando Sit” right away and give him the love he needs, he does great.

I think the ideal family will be someone who can give him the love he so desperately deserves and will teach him all the finer things in life. I think he would excel at formal puppy training and that would also ensure he'd be the best dog around. Brando can be with or without another fur creature and also with or without kids. He needs to be with someone that will allow him to snuggle with them because he is a snuggler when he gets tired. Brando sleeps in a crate at night with the door open. I believe if you are a person who works outside the home he will need to be crated at least for the first month until you see how he does for longer stretches of time on his own. Currently he is only alone for a couple of hours a day and does well.

So, what else would you like to know about our boy? Are you ready to bring this little boy into your life? If you have been approved for adoption of a RAGOM dog please email Placementatragom [dot] org. If you are not approved – send in an application so we can get this little boy into your home.

Things are going really well for Brando. He is doing great here with the Newfs, however, he desperately wants a family of his own to love. Brando sleeps in a crate but the door is left open and he is completely potty trained now. Every once in a while he will decide that wood would be a good thing to chew on, but you tell him no and off he goes to find a toy. He has “sit” mastered and now we are working on stay and down. I was amazed at how easy sit and come came to him.

Walks are easy going as long as you let him carry part of the leash in his mouth - then he thinks he is in charge.

Brando loves to snuggle on the couch with his human friends. He thinks that is the greatest thing since dog cookies. It really amazes me that even if we are eating he will get up and snuggle and go to sleep. Every once in a while he will ask for a nibble but you just tell him no and he goes back for a nap.

Brando will definitely need a family that will play and exercise him, especially in the morning. He is a little spit fire in the mornings so I always bring him for a quick 20 minute walk and then of course he comes home and thinks he should play with the Newfs for another 30 minutes. They don’t like to play that long.

Today I found out that Brando HATES to be left inside when I was outside doing garden work. He sat at the door and whined up a storm. I mean carried on, so he came outside with me and that drove the Newfs crazy that he got to come out and they did not.

We also went to the vet again yesterday. I notice Brando’s feet were swelling again so we did some blood work, which all came out pretty good. He is a little anemic but not bad. So we believe it is all the “worms” that he had when we first got him that are causing him issues. So we are starting a heavy dose of worming meds. The Vet feels there are “hookworms” imbedded in his feet. I know, gross (!), but not contagious to either humans or dogs. Oh yes, and guess how much Brando weighed in at now – 35 pounds. You would never know because he is so skinny, but he is very muscular.

So are you ready to bring this little boy into your life? I know he is more than ready to find a family that will love him. If you have been approved for adoption of a RAGOM dog please email Placementatragom [dot] org. If you are not approved – send in an application so we can get this little boy into your home.

Well, the time just slipped away from us because we have been having so much fun with Brando. He is the easiest going wonderful dog. Puppy, yeah maybe, but does not act like one. Brando is completely house broken and crate trained now. He also does really well on walks. He has almost mastered sit, unless you are talking meal time and than he is jumping around wanting his food.

He weighs in at 26 pounds, he has not grown a whole lot since we got him about a month ago. He is off his medication and his feet look great. When Brando starts to nip you just say "Ouch!" and he stops immediately, which is nice. If you are looking for a snuggler this is the guy for you! He loves to sit next to you on the couch or floor and just sleep next to you or with his head on your lap. When you have food you can tell him no and he will lay down and not bother you until you are finished.

This little boy came from a horrible background but has had NO issues at all with us. His foster dad has a woodshop downstairs and Brando will go down amongst all the loud tools and just hang out with him with no problems. I did hear he does not like the wind, but we have not had many windy days to test the waters on that one.

So, if you are looking for a Golden which looks a little different and a little older, I have the perfect man for you – if you have been approved for adoption of a RAGOM dog please email Placementatragom [dot] org. If you are not approved – send in an application so we can get this little boy into your home.

This update is a tad different – it came from a friend of Brando’s in MS.

Hey Buddy,

Was great hearing from ya. So they thought you were a girl, huh? That made the guys laugh. Ok, so at least they renamed ya after a tough human. So how's life up at the north pole? Man, you better grow that coat out or you'll freeze. So do they get summer up there...ya know warm weather and grass? And you're living in the city.....well guess that beats living in the "dump" (literally) that we all were living in. Guess being in water all the time took it's toll on ya, Buddy. Man, the pics you sent show how tough you are looking. At least you got a home and humans to take care of you.

Most of us are still fending for ourselves down here, living in the water, muck and trying to find food. Bet you are getting 2 squares a day, huh?

Cracks us up that you got taken to a Golden Retriever rescue group. They must be nuts to pick up and take a guy like you. You are as Golden as ole Sparky down here...remember him? He was the Bloodhound that wandered into camp one night. He's still here. He said to tell you to send those people back down here to get him.....he has a Golden personality and a nose to go with it, ha ha.

So anyway, you're starting to look better. But you really should tell them you are a bit older than they think. You are one lucky guy to have the chance to find your own home and family. But from what I hear people who look at the site you're on are looking for Goldens, not some raggamuffin like you. Yeah yeah, I know you told me your foster Mom says someone will come looking for a Golden and see you and fall in love with you cuz you're so cute and well behaved. Geez if they knew what you had to live in and still survive someone should be grabbing you up, realizing how grateful you'd be for a home of your own. Well, good luck, Brandee, cough cough, I mean Brando (I said that in a real low tough manly voice)!! Maybe by the next time I write I will have been lucky enough to have someone rescue me and maybe you will have found your...what did you say they call it...oh yeah, your Forever Golden Home and Family. Good luck with that. By the way....Lola says hi...wink wink :) Hang in there, I know someone will see what a handsome and loving guy you are.....and uh, you don't need to mention I said that to guy, ya know?

George in MS, your former roomie in the garbage dump/pond.

Brando here, I just want everyone to know that just because I don’t look much like a Golden right now, I act like one. My Foster mom says I am even more special because I came out of horrible situation and turned into a nice young man. You will also need to take note that my fur is coming in nicely, my scabs are almost gone and my legs are starting to look good. Oh yeah, she even said I had to learn how to sit....hello, I know how to sit! So I now sit and wait very impatiently for my food, to be petted, and every time I get touched. What is that all about? Foster mom says once I know sit really well, she is going to work on down. What is that all about???? Hello, I am a puppy. Foster mom says a tired puppy is a good puppy. Yeah, whatever.

So to let you know where I am, I thought I would tell you that I sleep in a crate just fine, I am pretty well potty trained, unless you leave an afghan on the floor and then I think I should piddle on it. I am learning sit and down, both need work. I love to play and just get lots of pets. I have almost stopped nibbling on people now. I thought that was the way you got attention. I guess not because now I get lots of love when I don’t nibble and when I do, the humans walk away from me! My perfect family could be with or without kids, but I know I will do well if someone would bring me to training. I just want to be the best dog I can be when I get bigger.

So, would you give a guy a chance? Could you possibly have a place in your heart for a little guy that is getting healthier every day and waiting for a home to call his own? I know the Newfs will miss me, but really I just want a home of my own.

Thanks for listening and have a wonderful day. Remember, you have to put your butt on the ground when someone says sit or you don’t get a cookie. That is just in case you forgot; I sometimes do and hate it when I don’t get the cookie!!

Brando

Thursday, March 30, 2006

Brando has come a long ways and is getting more and more hair each day. Potty training is going great and he continues to go to the door to go out. He usually has to be bribed at the door if it is wet or he sees snow, but he goes out, does his thing and comes right back. He is eating 4 cups of food right now. I was thinking he would be a big boy, but now that the swelling of his paws is down he looks like a he will not be as big as we were thinking. However, he is a solid boy.

Brando is ready to find a family of his own, so if you are looking for a nice young male that is almost potty trained and completely crate trained; I have the man for you. We are working on sit and I bet we will have that under control in a week or so.

Tuesday, March 28, 2006

Brando here – Foster mom gave me another bath this morning – okay I admit it really does feel good to get all the dead skin and old rotting scabs off me but, come on, give a guy a break and let me smell gross for a few days. Next she decided I needed to be brushed, hello, did you see my picture, no hair foster mom, get a clue!

I slept great in the crate last night – I think it was because foster mom put this stinky lotion on me. It felt sooo good going on, kind of like a good rub down. Still don’t think she needs to touch my very sore back legs, but once it is on, they feel better.

Let's see, so my good points are: I am cute - okay sorta, love to sleep in a big crate, I don’t know my name, but then again I won’t leave your side for long, I love to play for a very short time and best of all, I am fun to be with. I really want a home to call my own and a family that will spend time with me and teach me the finer points in life, like how to sit, stay, fetch and all those other commands. I would love to go to training to help me with my mouthing too, but mom says I am already 50% better than I was. I figured out you bite toys not the arms that love and pet you. Smart man!

So if you are looking for a "hairless for the time being" young man, I could be the one for you! Sending in foster mom to finish, you know she always has to have the final word!

Brando is doing great here and his skin is clearing up - the bath helped that and we will do another one on Friday, just don’t tell him if you come to visit. He is crate trained and potty training looks like it has been accomplished. He has been going to the sliding glass door for two days now. Thank goodness. Brando has a big wire crate that I have in the living room that he sleeps in during the day, even when I am home he goes there, open door policy you know. At night he has been going in a smaller one in the bedroom but we are thinking about leaving that door open too because he tends to just settle in for the night and not move. There is the update and I say everything is moving along great!

Foster mom and Brando

Monday, March 27, 2006

Our Little Brando had a tough night but he is sleeping comfortably now. During the night either he got too warm or just way too itchy and could not stop the itching so I took him out of his crate and went to the living room with him. Once we got his lotion on he seemed much calmer. Well he had to be, because we just laid down for a minute and we were both out like a light.

Potty training is going pretty good – this morning he went to the door once and so with any luck he will have that down in the next day or two. I was trying to figure out what the best family for Brando would be and you know I think he would do better with a little older kids – say 8 or up. I don’t think he would be bad with the young ones, but he is pretty mouthy since that was his livelyhood for so many weeks. He still can not sit very well because of all the sores so we are not able to work on that but we are working on staying on fours and no mouthing. Crate training all in all is fine, I know the first night we never heard a word out of him, so he will be fine in a crate just as long as you don’t plan on keeping him there both during a long 8 hour day and all night. There has to be a balance with him, he needs the contact and he follows someone all the time.

Tonight he will get another bath to help relieve some of the soreness and loosen up the scabs some more, I pray his hair will start coming in soon, because he is pretty bald on the legs, tummy and neck area. In these pictures you can see some of them, but he looks SO much better than he did on Saturday. By next weekend, I am thinking we will have a looker on our hands! Actually Lindsey our newest daughter already thinks he is cute - I am not so sure, but I think in time he will be.
