Makwa 14-101 was brought into RAGOM on April 27th. He is an 8 year old male Golden/Great Pyrenees mix, neutered and weighs 82 pounds. His name means Bear in Ojibwa which is fitting cause he is HUGE! No one can believe he only weighs 82lbs since he is HUGE and looks like a mini Lion! Makwa loves kids (lived with a 6 and 8 year old).  His previous owner owned sled dogs therefore Makwa is extremely strong! I consider myself strong and he pulls me across the yard! Makwa's foster dad is a big bodybuilder and he can barely hold him back on a walk! So if you can't bench 300lbs you probably shouldn't adopt Makwa :)  Makwa does not like cats in his space and he doesn't like other dogs in his space and will warn them with a growl. M akwa loves car rides so much that if he sees you put on your shoes, he will run to the door with excitement!

Makwa was mostly an outside dog that was allowed to sleep inside during the winter. You can tell Makwa's favorite place is outdoors. He will sleep on the deck for 8 hours and longer if his foster mom let him. He much rather be outdoors than stuck inside. He is house trained, has never been crated and is not destructive when left alone indoors.  He does show signs of resource guarding toward dogs but is fine with humans.  Makwa will need a tall 8' physical fence, as he has been known to jump 4' fences and bolt from doors if he gets a chance.

Makwa's previous owner has had him for 2 years. She says Makwa spent the first 3 years of his life wandering around town as a stray and then taken in by a friend for 3 years. The friend was going through a stressful time in her life and the SO took Makwa with the understanding that she would take him back when she got her life back on track – that never happened.

Makwa thinks he is a lap dog, loves loves loves attention, and loves to get close to humans. He is also very vocal. He usually will wake you up at 1am  just barking (maybe he hears things?) He is a great 7am  alarm clock, barking cause he's lonely :) He also barks a lot when he's outside, stranger sightings and communicating with the neighborhood hounds.

Makwa 14-101 had surgery for a broken canine tooth and he had a large tumor on his rear end removed on 5/07/14. The pathology test from the tumor should come back next week and let's hope for a benign result! Makwa has also tested positive for Lyme's disease and Anaplasmosis :(

Makwa is so super duper excited that he has found his fur-ever home :) He get's to move to a "no snow" climate, which will help his stiff joints, and get's to romp around on the beach digging in the sand enjoying the cool breeze bouncing off the Pacific ocean and exploring the Red Wood Forests where the world revolves around Makwa's happiness :)

Makwa got to meet a bunch of new people this Thursday. The new neighbors had a housewarming party and they wanted to meet Makwa while we were outside, cause who wouldn't want to meet a teddy bear. :) Makwa was loving up all the adults, but he was not a fan of the kids. The kids were ranging in ages of 3-14 and for some reason, when any of the kids would approach him to pet him, he would sit there and let out a growl. He never bit or showed his teeth. Although Makwa used to live with 6- and 8-year-olds and used to love kids, right now he just isn't a fan. I am not sure if this is due to the fact we are an adult-only home and he has only met adults, whom he adores, since we've fostered Makwa and he hasn't been around kids since his last home that he's unsure of them. This might change in the future, but for now, Makwa would do best in an adult-only home just to be safe and keep Makwa at his happiest.

P.S. Makwa is not a fan of you trying to girl him up and paint his nails pink.

Makwa has had a busy few weeks. He got a new foster brother, a Great Pyrenees, for 3 weeks before he got adopted. Makwa wasn't a fan of him being on his turf and he would growl at him, try and mount him, then bit him on the back, but did not cause damage as I believe Makwa is 100% Alpha dog and wanted to make it known to any trespassers. Makwa would still do best and be happiest being the only dog as he just loves his humans and boy do people just melt over him.

Makwa had a pretty laid back forth of July. He dressed up for a little bit and then just hid inside the house once the loud fireworks started. He did get to sleep in his foster moms bed that night :) The great thing about Makwa is he can have free roam of the house as he does not get into anything. Nothing intrigues him other than wanting to be petted.

As of July 5th Makwa got another new foster brother Sparky 14-185 who is a love-able giant puppy :) Makwa hasn't growled at him unless he is laying down and Sparky wants to get him to play. Otherwise Makwa tries to avoid him or stalks him and tries to mount him, which Sparky 14-185 responds to this by thinking he wants to play and tries to play. That being said Makwa gets to free roam the house and his foster brothers get to stay elsewhere with a baby gate. Makwa respects baby gates.

Makwa just loves to go for walks, but he just can't handle the heat outside. He was outside getting to know the new dog Sparky 14-185 and after about 45 minutes running around the pool taking breaks in the shade, I brought Makwa inside and he threw up from the heat exhaustion :( So daily walks are a must but keep them to 20 minutes and only do them when it is cooler outside or when the sun starts to go down to keep this pup happy and healthy.

Makwa had a fun trip to PetSmart! He got to meet all kinds of people and dogs and he loved every moment of it...especially marking down the treat isle hehe, clean up on isle 3 please. Makwa has no problem meeting new dogs, whenever he sees dogs he whines and wags his tail then does the sniff sniff with the other dogs. Also if you plan to bring Makwa for a car ride, which he loves, make sure you secure him in the back cause he will climb into the front seat, then try and climb on the drivers lap, and will throw your car into neutral while shoving his head between the shifter...anything to get close to you :)

Makwa did great at the groomers! They had a hard time giving him back to me as they all wanted to keep him :) He is so fluffy, smells like flowers and has no more dreadlocks.....He kinda looks like he stuck his paw in an outlet with all that fluff haha.

Happy almost Friday from Makwa! He wanted me to post a couple videos of him romping around before he went to the groomers.

My "little" lump on a log. That about sums up Makwa! He is literally just a cute, furry, lump on a log. He's a very very mellow pup and prefers to just sleep at your feet and be petted. He hasn't come out of his shell yet with his toy playing. He came with a toy that the SO said he loves to play with and throw up in the air, but at the moment he doesn't want much to do with that toy yet. He is also a little weary of whatever you have in your hands...even paper. He responds by backing away from you until he realizes nothing bad is going to happen to him. He is also a little weary of a man in a business suit? His foster dad, who he follows around all the time and just adores, loves, comes home from work wearing a business suit and Makwa backs away from him a little afraid but that's it! Once his foster dad changes clothes all is good. I find this a little odd. When Makwa is inside the house he is the most mellow and isn't a huge fan of you rough housing with him, and by me saying not a huge fan of it, he just lays there. Now when Makwa is outside and you try and rough house him/get him to play and romp around he loves it! You can definitely tell outside is his favorite place plus he isn't stuck being close to his foster brother (my resident dog) who Makwa tries to avoid like the plague lol

Makwa has his grooming session set up for the 11th of June. He can't wait! He will probably sleep during the entire session because he just loves to be brushed. He is also getting more comfortable in his foster home and his barking is much better! No more 6am wake up calls and he only barks if someone comes into the house, random airplanes, and if he sees strangers outside. Makwa needs to be able to spend most of his day outside sleeping and relaxing as that is his happy place. He also would do best in a quiet suburb or rural area as the hustle and bustle of the city life makes him nervous and stressed.

Makwa had a great relaxing Memorial weekend! He got lots of pets from strangers at the coffee shop who fell in love with him. He is such a show stopper.

Makwa walks like a champ with the gentle leader after he's done fighting it, trying to get it off his nose. As far as his eating goes, he has just been too spoiled so he will only eat his food if he gets a little treat put in it :) Makwa still spends most of his day sleeping outside on the deck rain or shine...but as long as there is no thunder or lightening! He has storm anxiety but will just try to cuddle with you or he will hide in the kitchen and shake :( Poor big guy.

Makwa is so happy to announce his tumor came back benign! We are so happy :) His mouth is healed up and he get's his stitches outMonday yay!

Makwa has been doing so great and feeling so much better that his personality is starting to come out and boy, is he the cutest, goofiest bear ever. He loves to get as many pets from people as he can and he is starting to get little bursts of energy and run around, pouncing and sticking his cute furry butt up in the air wanting to play! We just can't stop laughing :) He loves to play "troll" under the deck when you walk over to the deck stairs he will pounce in front of you playing so you can't get up the stairs :) He's so silly!

Happy Tuesday from Makwa! Makwa says he can't wait to get this cone off! He also would like to let you know he will only eat if you hand-feed him... I think Makwa is milking his surgery "feel bad for me" for as long as he can. :) His surrendering owner said they would fill his food bowl with water 1/2" from the top, then fill with a scoop of his dog food, and also they would put a piece of human food in with it to convince him to eat. Well, hopefully once his mouth heals from his tooth extraction and deep cleaning, he will eat dry kibble and drink his water....separately...and on his own. :)

On another note, Makwa's undercoat is so matted up and stuck that the vet wanted to shave him! The problem with shaving that type of coat is it can grow back like a Brillo pad, not grow back at all, and even cause alopecia. I found a wonderful groomer that can't wait to get her hands on his fur! Hopefully he will be healed up enough by the 1st of June so we can get him all groomed up. :) Check back for those before and after photos as I believe it's going to be huge!

Here is some information on Makwa 14-101 and the breed he is! Also his personality fits a Pyrenees to a T! I don't see much Golden Retriever traits in him.

Golden Pyrenees are considered to be heavy shedders, depending on the climate they live in, so expect to have white hairs on your clothes, furniture, car, and toothbrush. Don't clip the hair during hot weather. The coat keeps him cool, and when you shave the hair you compromise his natural protection from the sun. Check his ears once a week for dirt, redness, or a bad odor that can indicate an infection. Because his floppy ears block air circulation, they must be checked and cleaned weekly to prevent ear infections.

Brush your Golden Pyrenees' teeth at least two or three times a week to remove tartar buildup and the bacteria that lurk inside it. Daily brushing is even better if you want to prevent gum disease and bad breath

Everyone who lives with a Golden Pyrenees should have a set of ear plugs. He barks a lot, because that's his job. He'll vocalize — loudly — to ward off pesky intruders, and he's got a broad definition of intruders. He will bark even more at night because of his extraordinary senses of sight and sound, which enable him to detect coyotes, deer, wolves, raccoons, bear, and possum (all of which must be protected against). His vocal styling will definitely scare them away and keep the family and property safe.

A Golden Pyrenees hearing is so sensitive he can detect intruders even with all the windows closed in the house; the air-conditioner, TV, and dehumidifier running on high; and the iPod playing AC/DC at full blast. He really can hear that well, and he'll definitely let you know all about what he hears.

He'll let you know his emotions, too. Almost all Golden Pyrenees use a paw to let their people know how much they are loved. He'll paw on your shoulder while you're driving, on your lap while you're eating, on your leg when a yummy treat is near (even a not-so-yummy treat).

He has double dewclaws — not one dewclaw like most dogs, but two that are near each other. Don't even think of removing them, because he uses them to climb (part of your protection services). Keep the double dews trimmed, as they can easily get caught on fences and tear easily.
