Our sweet Anya was adopted right after Christmas and has two wonderful fur brothers to show her the way, along with a lot of love from her new mom and dad. She brought us great joy while she was with us and will always have a place in our hearts.
A big thank you to the many RAGOM volunteers and supporters who helped and loved this special girl at every step along the way. Anya sends her love to you all for helping her find her new Golden Life!

You may have noticed that Anya's status has been "Unavailable" for a few weeks. Recently, our sweet Anya took flight on us again and she spent two nights outside in the cold and fled when anyone tried to approach her.
With the help and support of many, we were able to locate her and bring her back into safety. Shivering, wet, muddy, and full of burrs from head to tail, she needed to decompress for a bit before we begin again. A lot of rest was in order, as well as support from her foster buddies, Nicole and Paddy.
This was Anya's second time taking flight, as she also ran away when she first came into RAGOM in March. From both these experiences, we've learned that Anya will probably always be a high flight risk, especially during any transition times in her life or when anything new is being introduced to her that she's uncertain about.
Slow introductions and a few extra visits before placement will need to be part of her transition plan to help her become familiar and to start the bonding process with her future family.
The good news is that Anya has rebounded quickly and is up to her usual antics with Paddy. That means there is lots of chasing Paddy, continuing to pick up new toys (just to make Paddy jealous), and helping to track down those critters.
The fall season and frost has brought about a new friskiness in Anya, which I'm using to begin training her on the "stay" command. I noticed that she would run out my patio door before I was ready to let everyone out, and it seemed like the perfect timing to re-train the whole pack.
It's definitely not her favorite thing to do, but we have seen some progress and this can be an important command to keep her safe in the future.
We'll be using this time to continue exposing her to new things and people while also trying to work on her ability to respond to commands, especially since she is now much more treat-motivated. Anya is a very smart girl, but sometimes may work to outsmart you by the choices she makes.
A good example is when she's following me into the house in the back yard only to dart off at the last minute when she realizes she has lulled me into thinking she's listening to me. Part of this is definitely being playful, which is so great, and another part is trying to show me she's in charge and assert her independence.
We are taking in every moment of the lovely fall season, and Anya has learned that those piles of leaves can turn up some good sticks and are very fun to roll around in. She'll be continuing to soak up all the sun she can get while working hard to get prepared for her forever family.

A few words from Anya...
So, I finally recovered from Goldzilla. What a weekend!! There was so much to take in with all the activities, furry friends, and people—not to mention my TV debut the day before on Kare11. I'm the one laying on the ground in the front, hunkered down but holding my own with all my friends as we had the chance to let everyone know about Goldzilla.
On Goldzilla morning, we were up bright and early and on the road at 6 a.m. to help set up, work the event, walk in the Showcase Parade, and help with teardown.
I was lucky enough to make a new friend who was my buddy for the day while Foster Mom was busy. This whole Goldzilla thing was a new experience for me and she stayed right with me through the day, and I even got to snuggle with her on the way home.
I've been loving the cooler weather and have learned how to run and play with Paddy outside. Before we just wrestled in the house and I loved running outside—but now I like to run with him and play tag with him in the yard. He has a few spin moves I have to watch out for, but I know I can beat him in an all-out run.
When the play is all done, I usually finish with a kiss or two for him and we're ready to go in for a nap.
I'm one lucky girl to be part of the RAGOM family and have learned so very much over the last several months. I can't wait to show my forever family everything I've learned when they find me. I'll be right here with Foster Mom, Nicole, and Paddy until you find me—knowing that every minute will be worth the wait.

It's been about a month since our last update—the time has just been flying as we get ready for Goldzilla!
We've been busy with Anya's birthday on August 26th when she turned 7, and we had a little get together with some of her foster friends. She posed for a few pics, and then the hat was history as she made sure she got her share of ice cream.
I've noticed that while Anya has become more independent, she also likes to always be close when it's nap time or bedtime. She has turned into a Velcro girl and loves to be right up against my chair when I'm working and will squeeze in between Paddy and Nicole for attention and treats.
She has a special bond with Nicole who shares the same commercial breeding background. Somehow these two often end up sleeping as mirror images of each other or close enough to be touching.
Anya continues to get more playful with Paddy both inside and outside. They definitely feed off of each other from an energy perspective and can be a bit of "double trouble" at times. When Paddy's prey instinct kicks in outside, Anya is right there to help him.
She's learned to put her front paw through the chain link fence to scoop up anything he wants on the other side. I've seen her do it several times (great eye-paw coordination), and once it was with a baby bird who was just barely out of the nest. I'm not sure that it's her prey instinct kicking in or just wanting to help out Paddy. His paws are a little too chubby to make it through the fence.
I've also seen her initiate play much more and be more strategic in her play. Sometimes pouncing, and yesterday even up on her back paws to challenge him a bit.
With the cooler weather, we are definitely getting back on our walking schedule, and Anya does love to walk and definitely doesn't want to be left behind. She's a great walker. No pulling, walks right by your side and may be a little timid around new things but plows through it.
She continues to love running around in the yard and also loves going under the evergreen tree to hide, then comes blasting out. When she gets tired, she just plops down in the hostas enjoying the cool ground.
We will very much miss this sweet girl when she finds her forever home, but I know there is a family out there that can provide her with even more love and Golden adventures, which she certainly deserves.

A quick little update from Anya:
We are very busy getting ready for Goldzilla, so this will be short and sweet. If you haven't ever been to Goldzilla, check out goldzilla.ragom.org to see what this fun-filled day on Sunday, September 9 is all about.
I hear Foster Mom talking about all kinds of fun things as the planning takes place: Silent Auction, Wine Pull, Raffle, Off Leash Play, Foster Showcase Parade, and swimming, too! I think you better put this on your calendar for sure.
I keep surprising Foster Mom with some new happy moments (I like to keep her on her toes). I now play with Paddy daily. We like to wake her up with our playing, but somehow she isn't as happy as us when it's really early. Paddy is pretty relentless in getting me to play, and I've learned to give it right back.
I even can smile for the camera while I'm rolling on my back.
Another new thing for me: I've learned it's okay to be in the back yard while Foster Mom is mowing the lawn. A few months ago I wasn't quite sure of that big thing she was pushing around and would stay in the house. Now I want to be outside running around while she mows and wait at the door for her to let me out.
I also get pretty excited about walk time. When the leashes come out and Paddy starts spinning, I do my own little happy dance to let Foster Mom know you're not going without me.
I'm still a lucky girl going to doggie daycare once a week with my friend Jessa 17-227A and did my first full day last week. I was pretty tired that night but in a good way. I love when Foster Mom picks me up with Jessa and we can surprise Paddy and Nicole in the backyard to tell them about our day with a lot of happy barks. They are always so excited to see us - makes me feel pretty special.
We've been trying to keep cool in this hot weather and had a little play date with some of my friends this weekend. We brought out the pools, which I took a pass on. We also brought out the ice cream, which I couldn't take a pass on.
I stood in line to wait my turn when the spoon came around and just a few times cheated in the group of seven to see if I could get a double dip, but they called me out on it.
One last thing: my birthday is coming up on August 26. I'll be seven years old, but Foster Mom says I have a puppy spirit at times, since I'm experiencing so much for the first time. I already got my birthday present this year and am so very, very thankful. RAGOM rescued me and gave me the gift of a Golden life. It doesn't get any better than that!

July is almost to a close, and we have more of those first-time experiences with Anya to report. She's been a busy girl, but finds her time to rest with her pals, Nicole and Paddy.
Anya's personality continues to emerge as she gets more comfortable, feels safe, and knows she can trust us. Here's the latest news on Anya:
- First time going after a bird by herself and then stalking it in the evergreen tree with her head in the air and her front paw up and pointed. This girl might have a little prey instinct after all...
- Anya has been going to doggie daycare once a week for about 4 -5 hours. She has her friend Jessa 17-227A there with her and, much to our surprise, she follows the pack around and the worker. I was worried she would go off in a corner to lay down, but she sure surprised me. Of course, I'm the nervous mom and watch her on the webcam, getting worried when I can't see her. Guess we're both learning from doggie daycare.
- I've been working on Anya taking treats from the palm of my hand, and this last week, we had success. Seems so small, I know, but for both of us, it was huge - another step forward in trust.
- The best news is the first time not whining in the car. We've had several trips back and forth to doggie daycare and meet-and-greets, and she has stopped whining. She still mostly hunkers down on the back seat, but has started sitting up a bit and looking out the window as well. I realize now it was the newness of both the car and me that she needed to overcome, and now she seems to know a trip or two are just part of the schedule.
- And last but not least, first time retrieving. This girl likes to run after the decoy and bring it back sometimes with a little shake of the head and attitude. She also grabbed the rope toy once when it was in Paddy's mouth. I could tell she didn't know what should happen next when he didn't give it up. I think it will be just a matter of time before they start playing tug-of-war.
Here's a video of Anya learning to retrieve.
Anya has had the opportunity to meet some wonderful families at the meet-and-greets. She still is very shy and definitely out of her element at the meet-and-greet, but everyone stopping by to see and pet her helps to socialize her a bit more. She is like a kid at the end, though, with that look on her face as if to say, "Let's go home."
As you read her updates, please know that she will go through an adjustment period when she finds her forever home. Her new family will need to just be loving, patient, and somewhat selfless in not expecting immediately all the wonderful Golden behaviors we always look for to make us feel good.
Those behaviors like the nudging, snuggling, retrieving, and a big smile will be there, as you can see by her updates, but it will take time for her to feel safe in her new home before she reveals them to you. And I don't think I've mentioned in any updates before, but Anya can definitely nudge with the best of them.
Having the ability to spend time in the yard and do a zoomie or two, or just lay in the grass and chill, will help both Anya and her forever family during the initial transition. Looking back, I think the yard is where she would first come up to me with Nicole and Paddy, and it is where she can experience a type of freedom that didn't exist for her most of her life and it definitely brings her joy.
If you are able to love her and just wait for her to emerge as she feels safe, she will reward you with many heartwarming first experiences that you can celebrate together. If you feel you might be this special family who can continue to support and help Anya find her way on her Golden journey, please forward an inquiry.
One last special note - Anya's birthday is August 26th, and she will be 7. First birthday this little girl gets to celebrate!!!

Hi, all! Foster Mom thought it was time for me to give a little update on my progress – so here goes!
I’m happy to report that I'm doing well at learning how to be a dog just like my friends, Paddy and Nicole. I’ve started being interested in toys, much to Foster Mom’s and Paddy’s surprise. I could tell Paddy didn’t know quite what to do when I picked up one of his toys and trotted off with it.
I do have a few favorites – of course, the tennis ball is one and the other is this little orange football that squeaks. I’ve always heard Paddy make it squeak, but was a little surprised when I made it squeak. When that happened, I dropped it immediately and then did a few barks back at it. Sometimes I like to hop, going after it, and do a big pounce.
Watch me play with a tennis ball and another new toy.
We didn’t make it to the meet-and-greets in June due to rain, so I’ve been working on meeting neighbors. Paddy always greets everyone at the fence, so I’ve learned to run over, wag, and sometimes even jump on the fence to get a few pets.
I also got to visit another RAGOM adopter’s home to meet their cats, just in case my future forever home has cats. Foster Mom says I passed the cat test, which I think is a good thing. I wasn't really interested in the cat and just stayed close to Foster Mom, but if that's passing - I'll take it!
Of course, there were a few more storms with all the rain, and I have my two best safe spots identified for my hunker-down strategy. One is under the piano bench and the other is with my good friend, Nicole. She doesn’t seem to mind the storms at all, so I just snuggle in with her and we’re all good.
I really have the routine down now with Nicole, Paddy, and Foster Mom. It’s good to feel secure with a schedule each day and also know there is always love and lots of fun.
I think I'll do best with a daily routine as I get adjusted in my forever home, and just a quick reminder that I'll need to have a fenced-in yard (minimum 4 feet high) and another confident dog that can help me learn the new routine.
Thought you might want to hear me say a few words – I do like to announce myself sometimes when I go out in the back yard and am very happy to let people know I’m here!!
Foster Mom says I’m getting a litle independent, as sometimes I don't come in so quickly when she calls. I'm just following Paddy's lead when he pretends he doesn't hear her, and there are just so many good smells for us to get in before she goes to work.
The good news is I've learned the command "leave it" really well and I didn't even have to work on it. Foster Mom is always telling Paddy to "leave it" when he gets into something he shouldn't, so it was pretty easy for me to figure out what it was all about.
As we head into July, I want to wish everyone a very happy and safe July 4th holiday! We're planning to be at the July 7th meet-and-greet in Edina, so if you think you could be my forever family, please come meet Foster Mom and me. Hope to see you there!!

Anya and I would like to give a huge thank-you to the Anonymous donor who sponsored her recently. It touched our hearts to know someone was following her story and the progress she is making. We so appreciate your support for RAGOM and our sweet Anya. She's sending RAGOM love and a big smile your way.
It has been a little over 2 months since Anya came into our home, and she has become so much more relaxed in the house, outside, with the routine, and just being part of the pack. She doesn't hesitate to go into other rooms to find us and has been caught a few times belly up on the floor wiggling and wagging while she rubs her back.
In the last few weeks, she has also started playing with Paddy on the floor where they nuzzle each other and share their own little secrets. I'm working hard to catch a picture or video of one of these special moments, but they both are a little camera-shy.
We're still working on a few commands. The "sit" command has been the most difficult as she doesn't like you standing over her, but she's doing much better at "stay" and "lay down." She also has started being interested in treats and will join the pack to get her share, which will really help to get her attention for training.
With the weather being so hot, we just haven't been able to get in good walks. She does get in her share of running with Nicole and Paddy in the yard, along with a zoomie or two in the morning when she first goes out.
To cool off, I'm having Nicole teach her how wonderful it is to lay in the pool, but baby steps first with just a little standing for a bit of relief from the heat.
Anya got to experience her first two meet-and-greets which were a little scary at first, but then she found a spot she felt safe for people to stop by and pet her. Afterwards, she got a special treat of a little ice cream (another first for her) which made it all worth it.
Her confidence at home has grown incredibly, but going out into the world is still a big learning curve with each new experience helping to give her a foundation from which to trust. There are a few signs this is starting to happen, as she now will take treats from others at times and will go up to them for pets if she sees that Nicole and Paddy are there.
I also have to tell you this little girl gives out a big snort as she settles in for a good sleep. My other dogs let out a big sigh when they are relaxed, but Anya just gives a big snort as she settles in - very cute, even if a little unladylike.
We've had a few more car rides, and she's getting so much better at jumping in and out of the car. Even though she is nervous at first, she will now usually lay down on the back seat and just hunker down until the ride is over. I think it has helped for her to get comfortable with my car and learn with each trip that we always make it back home.
With the exception of when I'm at work, Anya has had free roam of the house with Nicole and Paddy. She's right there with the pack to greet me when I get home and will start barking if I don't get in the house as fast as she'd like. I can tell she likes to have her people where she wants them - close by.
As I've observed Anya, I think she could do well with another confident dog regardless of age, male or female. She has bonded with Nicole who is 10 and Paddy who is about 4 and receives different things from both of them.
She is capable of play and also able to initiate it once she has learned to trust and feels at home. It will take time initially for her to build her confidence and comfort level when her forever family finds her, and they will need to be patient with her.
Another volunteer put it very simply - she really responds to love. As she feels the love consistently day in and out, her love for you will grow, and she's not shy about showing it.
Anya is hoping to be at the upcoming meet-and-greets in June if you'd like to meet this special little girl, and she's definitely looking forward to the ice cream treat that will come to top off those days!!

An update from Anya:
My Foster Mom thought it was time for me to say a few words now that I'm getting a little more confident - so here I go!!
It's been a busy few weeks with a lot of first experiences for me. My foster sister, Nicole, watches over me, which I love, and my foster brother, Paddy, has been training me on how to watch over the yard.
Paddy's a pretty lively guy, but a couple of times, I beat him to barking first - he was totally surprised. Guess I have the best of both worlds with Nicole and Paddy as I put my learning on the fast track to get ready for my forever family.
Thought you might like to see some of my firsts these last two weeks with a little perspective from me on a few:
- My first grooming appointment and first bows (could have done without the bows)
- A first playdate and visit to another foster's home. It was also the first time I learned to eat wonderful string cheese from a human hand. May not seem big to you, but HUGE for me!! I haven't taken anything directly from someone's hand my whole life, but that string cheese made it all worth it. I also got to run around with a playful pack of Doodles and make some new friends. Here's a video of me at the playdate.
- First time (and many more) sleeping in Foster Mom's bedroom on a dog bed - no more crate at night. I usually am just in the crate when Foster Mom is at work. I gave her my sweetest look, plus a little wailing, in the crate to let her know I was ready to be on my own.
- The first time (and many more) that Foster Mom left me with free roam of the house with Nicole and Paddy while she ran errands.
- I guess you would call it my first true thunderstorm. I did okay - just very happy when it was over. Foster Mom said we're going to try a Thundershirt next time. Even Paddy was a little afraid, so I didn't feel so bad.
- First rabbit chase with Paddy (the rabbit won).
- Surprised us all and ate my food for the first time without some extra chicken lunchmeat. This Golden Life can make you hungry, and I'm pretty good with whatever is in the bowl now.
- First time grabbing one of Paddy's chew toys. Ran to my crate and was feeling pretty proud until Foster Mom thought it best to put it away for a bit.
- Had my first encounter with a neighbor who came into the yard to pet Paddy. Thought it couldn't be too bad since Paddy was all excited, so I went over and got a few pets as well.
- Many, many first sounds to hear outside and get used to. Sounds like lawn mowers, kids playing, basketballs bouncing, jets in the sky, sirens, and so many more. It is a busy world out there, and Foster Mom is always good about saying "It's just a siren" or "It's just a basketball" in a soft voice. I think it's her tone that makes me feel it's okay, and it's important that she talks to me to help me get used to all these new things.
Still working on the "sit" and "down" commands. I've just been too busy with everything else and I'm not sure how important they are in the big scheme of things. Foster Mom says it's important as I prepare for my forever home, so I'm going to give it all my attention (or at least as much as I can spare) during the next few weeks.
Oh, and I saved the very best for last. Remember in my first update, there was reference to how I got my name. Well, when RAGOM rescued me, they noticed all the white smatterings on my nose, and everyone kept asking "What's on ya nose?" as they talked to me, and presto! My name became Anya.
But sometimes things happen for reasons we just can't explain, and today I learned that my name means "gracious" or "bringing goodness." I feel like it all makes sense now when my Foster Mom leaned down and told me that my gracious, gentle spirit will bring goodness to the lives of others, just like it did to hers.
Before I sign off, Foster Mom said to be sure to tell you that I'm now up to date on all my shots and all healed from my prior surgery. I'm doing so well that she has another outing planned for me on Saturday, May 12th - something called a meet-and-greet. Not sure what it's all about, but it sounds like fun. Hope to see you there!!

Anya is definitely getting more comfortable, and her joyful personality just can't be controlled at times. This girl is starting to give the Golden nudge, and kisses are plentiful when she first sees you. She also has started seeking out being with everyone and has learned to snuggle in front of the TV.
There's been lots of time outside which is definitely one of her happy places. Before the recent snow, she spent time checking out the yard along with all smells and sounds. She comes running when you call her name as she doesn't want to miss out on a little love.
We did experience fireworks one night in the distance, and she did head for the house. She seemed to associate the place in the yard where she was when she heard them and stayed away from that area for a day or two. We also had the "snow thunder" when she was in the house, and it got her attention, but she was able to go back to sleep.
Anya sleeps in her crate at night, and it is her safe spot right now. She knows "kennel up" and she usually goes to bed with a classical CD playing. This seemed to relax her early on and now it's just part of our routine. She also likes 99.5 FM, and I think my resident dogs are enjoying all the music as well.
The recent snow and all the wind was somewhat new to Anya. She wasn't quite sure what to think. She looked at me like "What happened to my backyard?" - but she quickly learned that it was okay and she put her nose in the air, following the lead of my dogs. She also learned that snow can make the pack frisky and you'd better be ready to run with the best of them.
Next week, Anya will have a follow-up vet visit to get her last booster shot, and we also have a bath on the agenda. She does get nervous on car rides, so this will be good practice for her. Our goals for next week also include starting to work on a few basic commands like "sit" and "down."
Sweet Anya has just started to live the Golden Life and will be working very hard to get ready for that special forever family that finds her. Can't wait to have her experience her first spring outside -- so many firsts for this special girl as she continues to blossom....
Tuesday, April 3, 2018
Anya is a 6-year-old Golden Retriever who is dark red with wonderful patches of lighter hair on her back legs that give her a touch of highlights and white flecked hair on her snout and forehead to give her a little character. She is a former commercial breeding girl and came to RAGOM through an auction in Missori on March 10th when her Golden journey began.
During Anya's second week with RAGOM, it was discovered that she needed emergency surgery due to pyometra. The surgery was a challenging one, but Anya did well and she sends her love to her first Foster Mom, Sherri, who helped her through those those first few difficult weeks.
Anya is definitely getting her energy and female figure back. She weighs 61 pounds, and we're happy to say her appetite is back as well. She is still learning about her new life outside of the breeding world and needs patience from her future forever family as she works through so many new experiences and encounters. The great thing is she is so curious about the world around her, and she also forms bonds quickly with people she feels she can trust.
Anya also likes being part of a pack and will need to be in a home with another confident dog who can help her to find her way. Her foster sister, Nicole, is teaching her about the comfort of a good couch and how you can climb up and worm your way in for a few snuggles, even when it's a little crowded.
This girl wears a smile a good portion of the time and is quick to give kisses as she gets to know you. Her tail wags often, and she especially likes to come in for her share of the attention when she sees others are getting it.
She also loves her walks and taking in the fresh air while she holds her head high. Anya is doing well with crate training and does well with a routine schedule of going out for potty. Toys haven't caught her attention yet, but she doesn't seem to be afraid of them, either, as she will go up and sniff them out. She's also very good at scoping out her favorite places to take a nap and yet stay close to the action.
It would be good for Anya to attend an adult training class for basic commands and possibly even go to a class focused to shy and timid dogs. Training classes will help to socialize her, and they also serve as a wonderful bonding experience for both her and her forever family.
Since Anya is a former commercial breeding girl, she will need a home with another large, confident dog and a fenced-in yard. This girl's sweet personality has emerged so much during the last 3 weeks, and she'll need lots of love and patience from her future forever family to continue to blossom.
She's sending love your way with her big, brown eyes and best begging expression as she waits for her very own forever family. And if you're wondering how she got her name, be sure to ask when you reach out to meet her....
