This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog.

Declan 16-046 is a 3-year-old male Lab mix. Very little is known of Declan's past; he is one of 11 dogs seized from a neglect/hoarding case. His name is Irish and means "full of goodness." Weighing in at only 32 pounds, Declan needs to gain about 30 pounds of goodness to be where the vet says he will be healthy - around 60-65 pounds. Healthy weight will need to be put on slowly, so his exercise is limited to about a half-mile walk daily (in addition to his wrestling antics with my resident dog). Declan is being fed a very high protein/high fat/high calorie food three times a day to get best benefit from the food.

Declan16046c1.jpg

Declan passed his RAGOM wellness exam with flying colors. He is unable to be neutered until he has reached around 45 pounds. He has another round of booster vaccines scheduled this week, and I'll get a weight on him at that time, as well as his heartworm and flea/tick preventative for April. Hopefully he's put on some weight and will be able to get neutered soon.

Declan is extremely sweet and very puppy-like due to his lack of appropriate socialization. He is learning healthy boundaries with other dogs in his interactions with my mellow Golden. Declan has lots of puppy energy, and we're working on his jumping. He wants you to notice him, so he likes to be your height so that you know it! He can be shy at first, but he's becoming more confident.

Declan16046c2.jpg

Declan is fed separately and in a muffin tin, because he has to be slowed down from gulping his meals. The first few days with my resident dog were challenging, as Declan didn't want him near me or his food. He has really blossomed after the first few days and he now plays with my resident with very little growling. He is learning that he isn't in survival mode anymore and there is plenty of food and love for all dogs!

Declan16046c3.jpg

Because Declan and his friends weren't potty trained, we're still working on that. He's crated all day while I work and doesn't mess in his crate, so he is able to hold it. He's just learning that outside is where to do his business. I've added some jingle bells on the door handle to the door he goes out to go potty, and every time he rings them with his nose, we go out. Just started this yesterday and I don't think he "gets it" yet, but I believe he will soon - he's very smart.

Declan likes to spend time with me snuggled up on the couch, and he has started sleeping in bed with me, which he loves. He is quite the snuggler!

Declan16046c4.jpg

It will be a while before Declan can be adopted; he'll need to be at a healthier weight and be neutered. He needs time and money to make his recovery, and you can help! Your donation of food, or gift cards for food can help change this wonderful pup's life! Declan and the "Hoarder 11" dogs are on a diet of Purina Pro Plan Sport (30% Protein/20% fat) food. He will be in RAGOM's care for a while and all donations are appreciated.

Thank you to all that already support RAGOM. Without you, saving these 11 dogs and all the others wouldn't be possible. Follow Declan's transformation on this page, where  you can expect weekly updates from me (or Declan, if he feels up to waxing poetic) - so check back often to see how he's doing and follow his adventures!

Declan here with my final pupdate from the foster mom's (FM) home. I am officially adopted and moving to my "forever home" with my new mom and dad. They have a fenced yard, lots of patience, and lots of love for me. It will take me a while to warm up (as with all humans) because I'm still trying to accept that only good things come from humans now.

My new mom Angela is a nurse and has the biggest heart. She loves on me like no other! My new dad Nick is lots of fun, and promises to make me his running pal once I'm settled in. Boy, do I love to run.

I've already found my "safe place" in the new home, and am spending time here as I adjust to living with not one, but two humans to love.

Declan16046n1.jpg

Thank you again, RAGOM family for helping me reach my potential, and filling Nick and Angela's home with a pup that will love them unconditionally.

Declan here, with what could be my final update. Some wonderful people came to meet me last night and despite how shy I was, they still decided they want me to be their "forever" doggy! I'm snuggled up with the foster mom (FM) tonight and she's really needy for some reason. She says she will miss me and I believe her; we've been through a lot the last few months.

When I first came to stay with her and my foster bro Indy I was scared, and thought I had to fight for everything - food, her attention, and everything else that was in the new house. She wasn't sure if she was going to be able to keep fostering me. But she didn't give up on me. She thought about it, but she didn't.

Thanks to the support of the RAGOM family, FM was able to find ways to help me transition to a dog that is ready for the next stage in my life: a stable, loving forever home.

Thank you to Barry, Lynda, Rhonda, all those who helped transport me, and also to all of you out there waiting to open your hearts and your homes to dogs like me that deserve a second chance. If you aren't able to foster or adopt, there are other ways you can help! You can donate food, supplies, or gift cards that help RAGOM continue rescuing and rehoming great dogs, like me!

Thank you for following my journey from being a scared dog on the brink of death to a vibrant, loving and healthy pup.

Declan 16-046 here with an update on my whereabouts. For the past week I have been on something called a Vacation, to some place called The North Shore. I had never heard of either of those things before, but evidently vacation is where you pack everything you own into a car and drive a long way through rain and heavy traffic in time to arrive somewhere tired, cranky, and a little scared.

After you get over that first part though, it turns out that vacations are GREAT! You get to hang out with a bunch of cool new friends, go to BBQ's and parties, do zoomies in the yard, go swimming (if that is your thing - not mine, thanks anyway), and have lots of people tell you that they really like you and are glad to have met you. Can't beat that!

There is one slight drawback to my vacation accommodations though. They insist here that I follow something called "the house rules". At my very first house the main rule was every dog for himself, so I got things mainly by being fast and being pushy. Evidently in this place that is exactly what DOESN'T get you what you want. Who knew? Here the emphasis in on being calm, waiting your turn, and sharing. I wasn't too keen on this change of rules at the start - I really just didn't get it; but it is growing on me now. I am starting to figure out that in a good resort like this there really is enough of everything (attention, food, toys, etc.) to go around, so I don't have to work so hard for it any more and can relax and be my real silly dog self. I think in my forever home I would like it if there were clear house rules so I can know where I stand and what is expected of me; that will really help me be less nervous.

I met a lot of dogs this week (all full-sized). I got along with everyone, and played hard with a few who liked that game. Neither of the other dogs who live at the resort really like to play, and I haven't bugged them about it. It might be fun in my forever home though if I had a playful sibling or a chance to go to a nice doggy daycare once in awhile. Temporary Foster Mom suggested that a dog park probably wouldn't be good for me (right now at least) as I get kind of over-stimulated and forget those rule things when there is a lot of chaos.

Looks like I will be heading home from vacation over the weekend, so I will be ready once again to interview potential forever homes. After this week I am feeling more positive about how my life is changing and I am excited to get started on my forever golden life! I'm posting a couple pics from my vacation, hope you enjoy them.

A few comments from Temporary Foster Mom

- With a fenced yard and other dogs to join in a "pee train" Declan has had no accidents at all this week. He can sometimes take a while to pick a spot, but he got quicker about doing his business as the week went on. He does not ask to go out, so I just treated him kind of like a puppy and put him out when I first got home, after eating, after a long nap, etc.

- He was loose in the living room with my dogs during the day, and other than dumping the dog toy basket he was not destructive. Stuffies do not have a long life around him, but he will leave them alone if you tell him too. All tags must be removed from all items.

- While Declan is still nervous about all of the new experiences he is having and acts scared at times, it is important not to mistake anxiety for submission. I have seen absolutely no aggression from him, but he stands up for himself among other dogs and likes to take the lead part of the time during chase/play. He can also be stubborn if doesn't agree with the human :)

- Declan is intimidated by people standing up/over him. He rarely will come to anyone if they are standing, but as soon as you sit down he comes over and tries to crawl into your lap!

- As a result of the last couple of items Declan does not have consistent recall outside. He loves going IN through the door though, so no problem getting him in from the yard.

- He eagerly loaded up in a crate in my van and road around town no problem. Leash skills are a work in progress as he tends to surge in multiple directions.

- He really did make friends with everyone, man and beast, that he met this week. More than one person commented that if they could have another dog they would love to have Declan! He has a silly sweetness about him that is easy to love.

Hello RAGOMland!

Declan reporting. My foster mom says a nice couple expressed interest in me, and she spoke to them tonight. She says they sound really nice. They're looking for a great dog to complete their family, and while I hope they will pick me, FM says the important thing is that they find the right dog for their family. But I'm perfect ;-). Well, perfect for someone!

We're really hoping for a RAGOM foster to come through so I don't have to go to boarding while my FM goes home to visit foster nana in Michigan.

Until then, I'm just hanging out, being adorable.

Hi All,

Declan here. Well, it's been two weeks since this neutering business, and the foster mom says it's helped me calm down quite a bit! She was also trained to train me with a clicker. I don't know how it works, but when I hear that noise, I magically get a treat or loved on. I now can sit and stay with the clicker. We're working on me now jumping up on foster mom - but I can't help it - I'm happy to see her after her day at work! I also do this when I want something (like to go out and potty/play).

I'm much more confident than I was when RAGOM first took me in, and I love walking in the woods and playing in the yard. Playing is probably my favorite thing ever, except for eating! I'm still sneaking dog poop snacks when I get the chance, so you'll have to do a good job of getting them out of the yard. Otherwise, they're fair game.

The foster mom spent $30 on a cool puzzle game that I figured out in five minutes. Two days later, she put $0.30 of frozen veggies in water and froze that in a dish. I played with that for at least half an hour. She said she's reevaluating a lot of her life decisions after that discovery.

Have I told you how smart I am? That's right - the foster mom says I am super smart, and need interaction and play time with you or another dog. But don't forget about our walks (runs preferred) - I love to go, go, go!

Well, right now the foster mom is planning a trip home to Michigan in a few weeks, so I'm hoping I'll get to spend some time with another awesome RAGOM volunteer while she's out of town. Who could say "no" to a face like this?

Monday, May 9, 2016

Declan here. Well played, foster mom - well played. This "neuter" was not at all what I imagined it was. Luckily, the nice doctors gave me medicine to help with my recovery. Foster mom is trying to keep me calm while I heal, but I want to play! Good news is that I'm now up to 50 pounds and should only need to gain another 10 or so pounds.

Anyway, now that I'm neutered, I will be able to come and meet some of you at a Meet & Greet! Stay tuned for more adventures, and I hope to see you soon!

Tuesday, May 3, 2016

Hi All,

Declan here. I'm writing my update as I'm getting a bit concerned. My foster mom (FM) is awfully giddy about this "neutering" ordeal happening on Thursday. I'm starting to get a bit nervous about it. But, how bad could it be, right?

I'm still having challenges with being comfortable on the leash when it comes to pottying outside. The FM is hoping this "neuter" helps me relax a bit more. Regardless, I really do need a fence - because I'm quick as lightening! I need lots of exercise, and it's tough on the FM because I still need to gain weight - so she can't let me get as many walks or jogs as she knows I need (Who is she kidding? She needs them more than me!).

Well, signing off for now. I'll update you after this neuter. If you don't hear from me by Saturday, send Milk Bones!

XOXO,

Declan

Monday, April 18, 2016

Hi All,

Declan here! So much has happened in the last week. The foster mom has discovered I do not do well on tie-outs, and was very frightened by this experience. I am having fewer accidents in the house, and she has pieced together that if I'm in a home with a fenced in yard, accidents are rare. When I stayed with Barry two weeks ago, I had only one or two accidents. Barry has a fenced in yard and I can take time to find just the right spot and relax. It's more challenging for me on the leash - however, when the foster mom takes me and my resident bro Indy to the woods, I can do my biz there with no problems.

My puppy spunk and energy is all channeled into my love for people and learning to play. I've discovered what "playing" is, and love to gently horse around with the foster mom and Indy. I love this "Kong" toy with peanut butter, and figuring out how to get all of the goodies out of it! My foster mom says I am very intelligent and sweet.

Declan16046g1.JPG

I've stopped going upstairs for some reason and don't want to sleep in the bed with foster mom anymore. She says she sleeps better, but I think she misses me. I still keep her on her toes though, with a middle-of-the-night bark if I hear or see something outside. I'm sleeping in the living room alone, or sometimes Indy joins me and we keep a watch out to protect foster mom and foster nana.

Foster nana has been visiting for a few weeks and I just adore her. She loves on me and talks soothingly to me. She makes me feel safe. I often think I'm going to be scolded or possibly hurt, so I duck or hide in my kennel. Foster mom keeps telling me she's not going to hurt me, and no one will ever hurt me again. I believe her, but sometimes it's hard to forget the past.

Declan16046g2.JPG
Foster nana, Indy and me on a walk in the woods

Foster mom said something about "neutering" and me calming down a bit. I don't know what this "neutering" thing is all about - is that some kind of new training? She seems to think it will be a good thing for me. To be determined...

I'm gaining weight nicely now. Foster mom is going to get me weighed this week and schedule this "neutering" thing. She says I can then visit at RAGOM adoption events, where lots of people will want to pet me and love on me, and if I'm lucky, will want me to come home and be a part of a "forever family." I don't know what "forever" means, but I do know what family means now, so it must be good.

Hi fans, DeClan here doing this update.

First off, thank you so much to Rona and SFHS for the Spring decoration on my page. I'm also thankful for all you have done for me to get me into RAGOM and a foster home.

I'm at my dog sitter's or temp foster's house while my FM [foster mom] is traveling. I was here for about a week when I first came into RAGOM, so I'm familiar with the place. I was a bit freaked out after the ride here but quickly got over it.  I met the dogs and cats without any real problems. I decided the big wire crate was my safe place again. FM was a bit shocked to hear that since I have to be bribed to go in the crate at her house.

I think I may be housebroken. I may have figured out that all the other dogs do their "business" outside, so I will, too. FD [foster dad] says this is a good thing. I get praise for doing my "business" outside. He lets us out pretty often.

Declan16046f1.JPG

We have been going for walks most days. We now walk about a mile. I got to meet the neighbors here. Sarah loves me and gives me treats. I'm really going to miss that.

Today we went for a ride. I wasn't thrilled about it. Braden 16-044 and I went to get weighed. I am up to 36.9 lbs from my original weight of 30.9. I still have a long ways to go, but headed in the right direction.

I go back with FM today. Thank you Barry for dog sitting me this week. Thanks to all who support RAGOM.

Spring is in the air, and thanks to a donation from RD in South Dakota, Declan's profile is now sporting some spring bling - a butterfly. Thank you!

Declan has gone to stay with Barry while I'm in NYC for the week. Just dropped him off this morning, and I already miss him! My mom has come to stay with my resident while I'm away, and Declan took to her right away when she arrived yesterday.

I'm looking forward to hearing a good report from Barry on this blonde boy while I'm gone. Here's a photo from yesterday of my mom, resident Indy and Declan the charmer.

Declan16046e1.JPG

Saturday, April 2, 2016

Guess which blonde babe has put on seven pounds in the last week? This guy! His coat is becoming healthy and beautiful and he has a sparkle in his eyes! Declan had his booster vaccine this week, got his nails trimmed up and received his April heartworm and flea/tick preventative. He was a charmer at the vet clinic, and stole the heart of one of the female vet techs ;-).

What a difference another few days makes! Zero growling and resource guarding with my resident. They playfully wrestle around in the house and can be in areas where food is with no issues at all.

Declan understands the back door "bell" means outside, but we're still working on potty training. And speaking of potty - this guy likes to grab a snack when he's within reach of poo in the yard - obviously something he used as a survival tactic when he was starving.

He should be at a good weight soon and ready to be neutered. Then we'll get him to a Meet & Greet where he will win hearts with his smile, sweet demeanor, and happy disposition.

Until then...
