Vic (Mac 08-236)

Meet Vic (formerly known as Mac), a 4-year-old Golden mix. He is a smaller dog weighing 42 lbs with dark gold coloring. He has the intense and marbled eyes of an Aussie (Australian Shepherd)--one eye is marbled blue. He is a gorgeous little hunk. He is neutered and up to date on all his vaccinations.

Vic is the sweetest dog ever. His previous owner adopted him from RAGOM when he was 6 months old, and she just made the heart-wrenching decision to surrender him due to personal health issues. It is evident that he was very loved. He is easy-going, happy, steady, and well-behaved. The owner did a beautiful job with his training. He has excellent recall and is attentive and responsive to my directions. And the best part--did I mention that he is a complete love bug?

He LOVES to go for walks and get exercise. We walk several times a day and he does great on a leash. If the other 2 resident dogs are out in front of him, he does pull a little wanting to catch up to them. He is a clown when he is outside playing and he will tease the other dogs and try to get them to chase him. If he grabs their Frisbee or ball, it is good natured and he will drop it if they come for it. When we get back in the house he settles down immediately.

Vic is crate trained but the previous owner only used the crate when she was gone for long periods of time (not often). He has had free roam of the house since he arrived and there have not been any issues at all. He does fine with cats. The previous owner said he is great with children of all ages. I will test him out with a family member’s toddler in the next few days. My neighbor (an older gentleman) stopped over today and Vic barked along with the resident dogs when they heard the car pull up. He greeted the neighbor appropriately, followed him to the kitchen and then laid down next to him. He is such a gem of a dog—so easy.

Vic is used to having a fenced yard, but he is doing great here going out on a leash to do his business. If he gets plenty of exercise and opportunities to play, ie at dog parks, he will not require a house with a fenced yard. Vic will need a person or family that can give him consistent exercise such as long walks and throwing a ball/Frisbee. He is super intelligent and attentive, so agility classes would be awesome to physically and mentally challenge and stimulate him. He is REALLY smart, and sweet!

Here is a picture of me with my foster sisters Annie and Angel (I am the cute one in the middle).

Hi everybody,

Vic here--I have some extra special news—I was adopted by a really nice couple. I have a new furbutt brother named Weiner (he is a Weiner dog with a BIG personality), and I’ll live right next to a nature preserve, so I’ll get to go on lots of really cool walks!

Here I am with my new Mom and Dad, and can you see my new “little” brother sitting in Dad’s lap? (I think he likes me, and boy will we have fun!)

FM here--Vic was adopted by the most WONDERFUL family. We are so grateful for the opportunity to foster him, and wish them the very, very best!

Hi everybody…Vic here! I thought I’d sneak in and give an update while my foster mom is away from her computer. I have had a really excellent week and my FM keeps telling me what a good boy I am (and that I am so handsome). I try to be a good listener for her –I don’t want to let her down.

Last week it snowed for the first time and me and my sister Angel (resident Golden) played and played and played in the snow—we loved it! When we all went back in the house, I was so tired. I ate my dinner and found this nice cozy cat bed to curl up on. It is just off the kitchen and this way I could keep one ear open and make sure I didn’t miss anything exciting.

There is not much new here—we have our little routine down. We go for a nice long walk first thing in the morning. My FM works from home so when she sits down at her computer Angel and I hit the couch and snooze until noon. We then get to go for another fun walk! Sometimes I bug her to wrap up work early and my prodding even works. She forgets that I am not 100% Golden because I am so gentle and affectionate, and where she goes—I go. The other day she laid down on the living room floor, and I thought it was just so I could get closer to her. She kept pushing me away saying something about doing her “core exercises.” She finally told me to bug off—she was laughing when she said it though, so I really don’t think she was mad.

My FM thinks I am part psychic because the other day I was sitting there looking at the front door. She thinks I sense I will be going to my forever home soon. I am getting kinda excited! Your friend, Vic.

FM here: Vic is absolutely the best dog. Please contact your Placement Advisor if you are interested in meeting him.

Vic has been with us for two weeks now and I continuously marvel at what a wonderful dog he is. He has settled into our family routine beautifully.

A friend stopped by yesterday and thought Vic was a puppy because he is so little and has those adorable ears. He was surprised when I told him Vic is going to be 5 years-old next month. Vic is perfect if you are interested in a dog with has puppy cuteness but with mature dog manners!

Here is Vic sitting so handsome:

Vic loves attention and is very engaged when I work with him. He knows basic commands including sit, lay, down, stay. He walks like a charm on a leash. We have a cat who likes to assert herself (she is a prima donna) and this intimidates one of the resident dogs, but Vic is not fazed whatsoever by her-- he will lie right next to her.

One thing that really stands out for me about Vic is how socially adept he is with other dogs. He is super cued into the resident dogs, and has such an easy personality that they both love playing with him.

Here are a couple of videos of Vic, Annie, and Angel (resident Golden) playing stick. Vic is the smaller, redder Golden: Video #1 and Video #2

Here is a summary of what I know so far:

  • He is easy-going, mellow, and eager to please.
  • He loves, loves, loves to be next to his humans and being part of the group. When I am outside working in the yard he is right there by my side.
  • I introduced Vic to another foster’s 18 month-old daughter and she petted him on the face and he did just great with her. He did not seem all that curious, but was very gentle with her.
  • He is affectionate and loves to be close. His surrendering owner did not allow him on the furniture or the bed—well, he quickly adopted the motto “when in Rome…” and he has discovered how nice it is to sit next to us on the couch, and what a great place the bed is. He waits to be invited up and then is so grateful to be there—he does not budge the whole night.
  • He has perfect recall and comes immediately when called, so if he is properly exercised, he will not need a fenced yard.
  • He is house-trained and has free run of the house when we are away. He has never been destructive at all.
  • He does not have any resource guarding issues around food or toys.
  • He loves car rides and “going along” with you. I have had him in the back of my SUV with the other dogs, alone riding shot-gun in the front seat, and in a crate in the back seat of my car. He is fine with any of these—he just loves to come along.

Here are some requirements that are needed for Vic's forever home:

  • A commitment to feeding him a high quality dog food. When he first came to the house he had a runny stool. I gradually shifted him over to Fromm’s and he has done really well on that. I suspect he has some grain sensitivities.
  • Vic will need a family that can give him consistent exercise. He has enough working breed in him that he has lots of energy, and would not be a good dog to sit at home for long periods of time everyday while his family works.
  • He will do best in a home with another dog.

Issues to work on:

  • He is sensitive and does not like being brushed. He needs to be coaxed and held. He has those beautiful long feathers, so I suspect he got burrs stuck in them and it was uncomfortable to get them out. We are working on making his daily brushing a pleasurable experience!
  • Honestly I can’t think of any other issues--seriously. He is a wonderful dog.
